Donor Wall

Here is what Bard thinks when I ask if superglue has good shear strength:
Superglue, or cyanoacrylate ester adhesive, has a weak shear strength. It’s very strong against tensile loads but not shearing ones. For example, you can lift a car with six drops of superglue on the roof of it, but you can’t glue a 40 lb weight to the wall.

(I suspect superglue will not be good for this application, but try it with a simple test.)

Thank you for the info Ladeana. It could be an interesting experiment to try.

I can plywood the donor wall, with the blessings of @Facilities , of course

@squarenuts Feel free to hang it. I think that is the best option. The only thing we originally requested was that any board that was hung would be painted to look nice. It does not have to match the wall color, but should look appealing to those entering the building.

I.e. time for some abstract art.

So I move around a lot and from experience, hot glue is the way to go. It is strong enough I’ve used it to glue picture frames to the wall. It works on textured walls and it comes off with just a small tug. I have to say that there was one house that wasn’t primed that had a small amount of paint removal. It was minimal and an easy fix but if we painted correctly then shouldn’t be an issue.

Definitely willing to give hot glue a try before mounting plywood, but still willing to do that as well. Just let me know!

@bradcozine want to meet up Sunday? I can show you where the signs are and maybe we can try all these ideas. superglue, hot glue, more kinds of tape, I love it!

The most frustrating part of this project is that you try an idea and it looks great, you come back to the space the next day to check and it still looks great, you come back a week later and one sign has fallen down. then another week later, three more signs have fallen down. it’s the slow heartbreak that did me in, lol. so it’s best to try these ideas ASAP so we have time to go through the anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance, etc

I promise I’m usually SO much more cheerful in real life!

@kim, I would love to do a round of experimentation! My calendar is unusually empty this Sunday, so I’ll let you pick the time… perhaps some other will join us to science!

I’m hoping @DanS can make it so we can test out empirically some of the theories mentioned in this discussion… starting with “you can lift a car with six drops of superglue on the roof of it”. I’m not sure what kind of car he drives, but it should be fine for experimenting! And, @DanS, afterwards we can maybe go play with the 3D Printers?!

awesome, I’m super flexible… I’ll throw out 10am as a suggestion?

as long as you all promise NOT to lift my car up with superglue, it’s small and tempting but let’s leave it on the ground!

I happen to love using hot glue… in fact, 75% or my projects ARE 90% hot glue.

Using the following search:

Results in a bunch of lists of suggests, universally listing hot glue as the number 1 entry.

I’m pretty confident that after we Sunday Science various approaches that it will be the contender to beat!

Sounds like a good time! Wish I could join in but im on bed rest from surgery. I cant wait to hear sbout the results though!

@bradcozine Even though I’d be driving a 20 year old pickup, like @kim, I’d just as soon leave it on the ground. haha Since they used to show lifting vehicles with super glue on tv commercials, it HAS to be true, right? Anyway, I’ll know for sure in the next day or so if I’ll be able to be up there Sunday morning. I’ll let you know. Are you planning on being there for sure?

Yes, 10a… but we can always play with the printers whenever you like! I think we may be scheduling some recurring FabLab Fun Time where people can come brainstorm, work on projects, revitalize existing equipment, and think about new tools and equipment to DIY for the space!

Ok, that sounds like a plan. I just need to check on some things before I can commit to Sunday morning.

There are hot glue guns and hot glue sticks in Room 2… near the middle of the bank of cubbies. I suspect this will work as it was on the walls when we tried to wash them down. It wasn’t very easy to get off and likely will remove the paint (experience from cleaning the classroom walls)… but it can be done…(experience from cleaning the classroom walls)

You might test glues supposed to be good in sheer and ones that are better with normal forces. There is also some stong adhesive tape in room 2 in the Tape drawer if you want to try that…

As the husband of a teacher, hot glue does work well for cement walls. This is how they hang everything without damaging the walls.

@bradcozine and @kim At this point it looks like I will be able to meet you at MakeICT on Sunday at 10:00a.m. unless anything changes. Looking forward to meeting you both and whoever else will be there.

For anyone swinging by the space during today’s “Situation Solving Sciencing Sunday” at 10a whether you’re testing out hypotheses, or just cheering the effort on, or even just here to work on your project… there’s a breakfast spread of healthy options… feel free to partake!
