The ways are endless… Set a date, make a task list , make those decisions as we go. There’s already a few good ideas above. @Mlujan interested in DJing?
I’ve started a folder for the event. I’ve created a link that anyone can use to comment on thoughts and Ideas. I’ve set it to comments so it’s easier to keep things strait for me https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gqkyKhNCVR0JYXYGWulUWsd077BLEI0n?usp=sharing
We’ve set the first meeting for July 14 in the Maker Market Meetings.
I’m definitely for different revenue streams. Just let me know when/what you are doing so I can record it correctly.
Absolutely will be coordinating with @Fundraising as well.
Have we ever done classes about how to make costumes? I’ve had some people inquire, and I don’t know what to tell them. Or general sewing type classes?
We did have a vendor at a makerfair last year who taught a number of Cosplay classes. If no members want to teach classes, maybe someone can reach out to that group and see if they would be interested in coming back and teaching more this year.
Malissa has done intro to sewing, and know your sewing machine classes before as well as basic patternmaking.
Last year’s lineup included making your own custom corset.
The more interest in a specific type of class there is, the easier it would be to arrange - sometimes the classes aren’t offered because they don’t fill up, other times it’s because the instructors available are short on teaching time.
I have a list of classes on my wiki page that I have offered in the past if I can’t get enrollment it’s not worth my time. I also do private lessons tailored to your project. Several years ago you couldn’t tutor people at the Makerspace and charge a fee. I worked to change that because the makerspace is a safe space to meet with someone you don’t know very well to teach a skill.
Cosplay can use a lot of unorthodox materials, like EVA foam, various plastics, LEDs, etc.
It would be awesome to have a class specifically on that. @Kez could probably help out with the LED part, though I don’t want to volunteer them without asking first.
Two videos I love about unorthodox materials. It’s fun to consider that you can make clothing out of anything that can function like fabric. Or, I suppose, anything that can’t-- I’ve watched enough Project Runway to see many examples, though the implementation in many cases was…lacking.
I have two individuals experienced in mascot/foam cosplay that i might be able to convince to do some classes. Example of their work::
I do a Sewing with Metal class that I think is a really good one for cosplay because you can make sewn aluminum armor. I could potentially alter the class for it to make a bustier. I have made several before.
My intro to MakeICT was a cosplay class about a year ago!
Wow that sounds really awesome, I’d love to take a class like that!
Also, I haven’t done a ton of electronics in clothing (Mostly bc I don’t sew v often), but I did make my grad cap light up with embroidery! And I’m currently making some electronic earrings.
I’ve been scheduling it with the Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers Guild trying to help get them some income but it hasn’t gotten any bites. I will get one on the schedule soon.
@Gretchen, you forgot to tag the other people in your post because I’m the only one tagged, but as for me, I will just probably lob general suggestions at this. I’m not sure I could commit to doing a class over it.
Thanks for thinking of me.
Cosplay does use a wide array of techniques but their focus I think is accuracy?
Like how do you take a character like the dad in how to train your dragon… And get every detail of his costume perfect… On you.
As a cosplayer this is definitely not correct! Ive seen tons of cosplays inspired by a charcter rather than BEING a character. I once cosplayed a fit but slim casual Zarya, a genderbent Data, and a genderbent Aizawa. There are definitely cosplayers who play to their strengths and strive for accuracy, but the vast majority I have met dont limit themselves to their body type/gender/race/asthetic/etc.
That’s good news!
A common misconception I’ve had has been upended. Wish my project que was empty. Lol!
The Maker Market Meetings have been cancelled, this event planning will be placed on hold until a future date unless someone else would like to take it over.
