Gardening

A high tunnel could be an awesome opportunity for this area and for the community. My dad has held workshops in the western united states and I’m sure we could find a specialist to help us set 9!3 up here.

I’ve got one in my storage building. I’ll swing by and pick it up on my way to Booth today. I’ll hang it on the wall of the maintenance shop so it doesn’t get chucked into the sale pile.

As for what’s in the ground…I’ve heard a few people talk about raised beds, if that makes a difference.

There’s a metal detector now hanging on the wall of the maintenance shop, right next to the light switches.

I built raised beds for my home, love them both functionally and aesthetically, just know, tilling is harder in raised beds.

Not for me…I ain’t the one what gunna do it!

You won’t need as much in tilling with raised beds. We put in raised beds this year, and it was night and day in terms of output - or maybe our soil is just. that. bad. We found some boxes at the Yard, used the parts we wanted, and then saved the rest for other projects.

Thanks David, I think I know where most things are, but it’ll be good to confirm that, and make sure there aren’t completely new surprises. There have been various things like portables, supply for them, the underground utilities, Sewer lines, and others over much of the area that appears clear near the building.

So raised beds I think would be a good thing in general.

And of course it rains today, so that checking out might need to be done later. :frowning:

I built these for a couple of hundred, the ground is just too far down for gardening.

Just go somewhere where the ground is higher.

And the ground gets further every year

My Neighborhood Association has a community garden with raised beds. We used 2X12 sides and 4X4 corners. Each is a high bed and a low bed. The beds sit on corrugated paper on top of heavy duty landscaping fabric, which is on top of several layers of newspaper. Between the beds the walkways are wood chips. We purchased loads of topsoil, and composted horse manure (organically fed) to fill the beds. We have a yard hydrant inside a welded, lockable cage. A grant and donations supplied a shed and tools.

The Hyatt Regency grants were used as one source of funds and City Council District 3 still has unspent funds. https://www.wichita.gov/Council/Grants/Forms/AllItems.aspx for reference.

I wonder if it would also cover a walking/exercise path around the property and signs showing distance walked, etc.? If someone would put together an estimate of the costs of putting in a community garden (or garden and walking/exercise path), I’ll be happy to call Maddy and ask her to look into it. She was with Council Member James Clendenin when they visited our new building a few weeks ago. Mr. Clendenin is an advocate for makerspaces in general and a great supporter of MakeICT.

It being winter time we should organize seeds (super easy to do… except it has never gotten done at our house)

How would we feel about a Christmas seed exchange? Like a cookie exchange where we all donate seeds and then we get a small bowl of different seeds to start in January.

I start tomatoes the end of January.

Here’s a fire pit design that’s super easy and you have no risk of exploding heads. Those skull heads sound cool but would need 3-6 months to dry thoroughly. The moisture is what makes them explode.

This is just 2 pieces of sheet metal bolted together in a circle, one smaller than the other with sand in between. He put some flat rock on top for looks.

I love it that would be so nice.

Sorry to have not replied sooner. The grants were pretty flexible, but sadly it seems that the funds have all been spent and no longer accepting applications.

As far as meeting dates I am open to any of the dates @Malissa posted depending on time of day. I do have a transportation challenge currently, so may not be able to participate in person unless I find a cheap vehicle soon.
