We did it! We built a community garden in under a year with the hard work of many volunteers and a gracious donation of lumber from Star Lumber. There’s still much work to be done, and the final vision of the garden will always be evolving and never be fully “done.” That being said, we’re ready to take on some rentals. We’ve got seven raised beds and a ton of room for in-ground plots as big as your heart desires. The Garden Committee will continue to take care of the communal area and experiment with new plants and new techniques, but there’s lots of room for you to grow your own herbs and vegetables.
I’ve attached the rental agreement. This will all be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cost is $25 per plot for the entire year. This will include access to water and all of the communal tools we’ve accumulated. Non-members can join, but keep in mind that this won’t provide access to the MakeICT building itself.
If you’re interested, please fill out this agreement and return it to me either via email or join us on Sunday at 11AM, when we’ll be having our weekly Garden Committee work day. Payment will need to go through MakeICT via the normal donation process. Cash only, via the donation envelope and MAKE SURE TO NOTE IT’S FOR THE GARDEN. Please contact me with any questions.
And as always, thanks to all of our volunteers for their hard work in making this dream a reality. We’re really proud of the work we’ve done. This all started via Zoom meetings last January. Just a bunch of MakeICT geeks who wanted to play in the dirt.
Here’s a helpful list of what to plant and when in Wichita, KS.
I don’t know much about gardening but would like to give it a shot. From the list above, however, it looks like I’ve missed all the dates for starting seeds indoors.
It seems these are the options listed for planting if you start now.
Tomatoes typically take about 100 days to mature. It’s definitely not too late to start them indoors, but it’ll be a later harvest and you’ll have a smaller window before frost takes them out. However, the growing season just keeps getting longer. For the sake of ease, I usually buy starts from either Well Garden Industries in Delano or from Craigslist (there are a TON of people who grow vegetables starts in our area and sell them cheap).
Eventually, we’d like to build a small greenhouse to start our own seedlings. I think this will be a winter project for next year.
That’s the one. Basic FDA organic guidelines were the easiest to go by. Generally, when it comes to putting any chemical fertilizers, pesticides or potting soil in any plot, we’d like a heads up beforehand.
However, this does not mean you have to use organic seeds or plants. A basic Burpee tomato plant from Walmart is OK. We’re not going to be that strict.
If you can do the legit Adobe digital signature thing, that’s fine. I just didn’t want people to type their name and send it back. I’m no legal expert, but I don’t think that’s binding.
I believe those were from the 3/26 Open House. If I am correct, they were damaged in transport . I don’t know enough about gardening to know if people would care to reuse them in some way.
