Woodturning: Maker Monday Edition

Makers should make things on Maker Monday. Turn something simple to find out what woodturning is about.

We will have several experienced woodturners, Members of South Kansas Woodturners, available. This week we will turn Part 1 of a Goblet. The outside. The Goblet is time honored turning project for newer turners. It combines several techniques. This project will take two sessions. The Maker Monday Sessions in August and September will be devoted to students turning either Part I or Part II of turning a goblet.

We wear Protective Face Shields (Safety) when turning. Dust or Cloth Masks are optional.

Kid Friendly, requires Parent with those under 16.

Monthly Meeting for SKW, Interested Make ICT Members and visitors are welcome. The Demonstration will be in the Lathe area. . We always have a Show and Tell about recent turnings. We learn from each other. We learn from our failures and our successes. Scheduled for 8:30 Come early to meet and greet other woodturners, The Meeting will start at 9:00 am

In the woodshop at the lathe we wear faceshields and my wear cloth or dust masks.

Make a musical wooden instrument from a box! In this class, you'll learn how to construct a box using butt joints and rabbets, as well as general use for the planer, table saw, and scroll saw. Sides will be constructed from walnut, cherry, or maple, and the top will be made from padauk. Participants will also be shown how to roughly tune their drums.

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, is an arc welding process that uses a tungsten electrode to produce a weld. Come to MakeICT to learn how. Participants will become familiar with the TIG Welder and will learn set up, safety, and correct operation while welding steel. MIG Welding authorization in the metal shop is required .

House plant tips & tricks

This will be more of a basics class on primarily house plants. And some tips and tricks on how to grow and care for your chlorophyl babies.
We’ll cover slightly in depth 1 -2 plants per class.
There will be a 30 minute lesson, followed by a period for questions and discussion.

There will be an additional 5$ fee at the end of the class if you wish to take home the plant/ propagation that you’ll be working with (while supplies last)

Our tours are free and open to the public. While you are welcome to just show up, we prefer that you register in advance so we have enough members on hand to assist with our tours. Sessions are at 7 and 7:30.
If you wish to begin your membership at Maker Monday we will have members here to sign you up.
You are welcome to hang out and chat after your tour. There’s always something interesting going on at Maker Monday!

Learn the basics to safely operate the major woodshop tools in this safety class including understanding the limitations of each tool, the forces created when using the tool and how to maintain safe control for improved performance. Tools covered: SawStop table saw, drill press, band saw, router table, jointer, planer, miter saw, oscillating spindle and belt / disk sanders and scroll saw. Expect at least two hours of walkthrough with our tools and equipment, followed by an OPTIONAL hour of hands on practice with the tools aimed at those who have little or no practice with woodworking tools

Prerequisites: Please read the woodshop tool access policy and safety requirements on the wiki page prior to coming to class. Safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, short sleeves • Advisable: Hearing protection

Upon completion of the safety demonstration you can use this woodshop equipment for your projects whenever you work at MakeICT as a member!

ShopBot CNC Using Easel

This class is for those interested in using the CNC ShopBot in the woodshop. During the class, students will design a wooden ring on Easel.com and carve out said ring on the ShopBot. Carving on the ShopBot is quick and accurate, so each person will have the chance to operate the ShopBot themselves and take home a small token of their hard work.

One-Color Screen Printing

This class will focus on the basics of screen-printing; from choosing a design, exposing a screen, washing out the stencil, and applying the ink to paper. Participants will get the opportunity to practice good screen printing technique by helping to produce a run of 50 wall-worthy prints.

We'll also answer any curiosities you might have regarding multi-color printing, printing on cloth, and obtaining and using other people's artwork.

Garden Planning Meeting
