Drone Pilot (FAA 107 UAS) Class

The class will be taught by an FAA Certified Flight and Advanced Ground Instructor. It will provide training needed to pass the FAA Drone Pilot (FAA 107) written exam which is required to fly a drone for any other than strictly personal use.

This series of three classes will consist of approximately 16 hours of classroom instruction and an optional "Drone Fly-In" at another site to be determined by the class.

The class schedule is:

Saturday, November 4th: 9AM-4PM with a lunchtime break
Wednesday, November 8: 6-10 PM
Saturday, November 11th: 9AM-4PM with a lunchtime break

Cost for the class will be $40 for MakeICT members and $45 for non-members.

Materials will be provided in the form of "soft copies" of various FAA and other subject related documents. Students will receive the materials when they register.

This session will including a short slideshow about MakeICT and then an in-depth tour of the facility. Members will also sit down with a number of leadership and peer members for a brief discussion to allow us to get to know you. At the end of this session, you will get your key to the building so that you can come and go as you please.

Make a Cat Platter

Laser Cutting Basics

This class will teach participants how to use the 80 watt CO2 laser cutters at MakeICT. We will be using Inkscape and LightBurn software to create and cut a simple project.

Participants will learn the capabilities of the laser cutter, machine and material safety, and operation of the machine in Cartesian (flat) mode. All participants will complete a small project to practice running the machine. Intermediate computer proficiency is recommended. Users should be comfortable with web browsing, Windows file folder navigation, copy and paste shortcut keys, and mouse operation.

Learn the basics to safely operate the major woodshop tools in this safety class including understanding the limitations of each tool, the forces created when using the tool and how to maintain safe control for improved performance. Tools covered: SawStop table saw, drill press, band saw, router table, jointer, planer, miter saw, oscillating spindle and belt / disk sanders and scroll saw. Expect at least two hours of walkthrough with our tools and equipment, followed by an OPTIONAL hour of hands on practice with the tools aimed at those who have little or no practice with woodworking tools

Prerequisites: Please read the woodshop tool access policy and safety requirements on the wiki page prior to coming to class. Safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, short sleeves • Advisable: Hearing protection

Upon completion of the safety demonstration you can use this woodshop equipment for your projects whenever you work at MakeICT as a member!

Woodshop Hazardous Materials Authorization

Learn to use exotic materials safely in our shared space. Participants will learn how to clean re-claimed wood, test for lead paint, and adequately clean up after the use of exotic woods. Once authorized, participants will be allowed to use exotic woods in the woodshop at any time. Expect to get dirty. Participants are encouraged to bring respirators if they have one, though dust masks will be provided.

*This CAN be taken before being authorized for the woodshop, though the use of the tools in the space would still require Woodshop Authorization..

Woodworking 101: Milling

In this foundational woodworking course each student will get hands-on experience taking warped and rough-sawn lumber to a straight, square, and dimensioned state ready to be used in finished pieces.

We will also consider the assessment of common defects including knots, wane, checking, cupping, bowing, twist, reaction wood and balancing structural concerns, aesthetics, and yield in lumber selection and creating cut lists.

Tools used will include the Bandsaw, Table Saw, Jointer, Planer, Moisture Meter, Metal Detector, Straight Edge, Winding sticks, Calipers, Tape Measure, Drill Driver, and possibly even a jig or two.

Students are encouraged to bring up to three pieces of their own warped or difficult lumber for processing.

One-Color Screen Printing

This class will focus on the basics of screen-printing; from choosing a design, exposing a screen, washing out the stencil, and applying the ink to paper. Participants will get the opportunity to practice good screen printing technique by helping to produce a run of 50 wall-worthy prints.

We'll also answer any curiosities you might have regarding multi-color printing, printing on cloth, and obtaining and using other people's artwork.

This class is for those interested in using the CNC ShopBot in the woodshop. During the class, students will design a wooden ring on Easel.com and carve out said ring on the ShopBot. Carving on the ShopBot is quick and accurate, so each person will have the chance to operate the ShopBot themselves and take home a small token of their hard work.
