Stained Glass Open Lab

Also, if you are an experienced Glazier and want access to the tools and glass without taking the Introduction to Stained Glass course, authorizations may be performed during open lab times. Instructor will cover safety requirements, tool usage, and a skills assessment for a particular skill level. Successful completion of an authorization will add the Glazier to the authorized user list.


Use of tools and/or materials without proper authorization is prohibited.

Session 2 of 3

Introduction to designing and building stained glass art projects. Students will learn fundamental safety for handling glass and the basics of designing, cutting, foiling, soldering, framing, and hanging Tiffany style glass art. Flat work, 3-D build, special techniques and finishing will be explored. See Session 1 for full description.

Restrictions:
Due to the nature of the medium and processes being used, no one under the age of sixteen years of age will be allowed in the glass work area without PRIOR approval of the instructor.

Prerequisite: Attendance and participation in Session 1 of this class.

Instructor availability:
Typically 30 minutes prior to class session, as well as additional lab hours as published. Additional individual time by specific arrangement only.

Session 2 – 1 instructional hour + 2 hours Lab
I. Beginning project finishing including chemical conversion/aging (patina)
II. Hanging and/or mounting
III. Jigging and fixturing for production
IV. Additional requirements for individual projects

Introduction to designing and building stained glass art projects. Students will learn fundamental safety for handling glass and the basics of designing, cutting, foiling, soldering, framing, and hanging Tiffany style glass art. Flat work, 3-D build, special techniques and finishing will be explored.

Tools available in the glass work area will include basic glass shaping hand tools, grinders, and soldering irons.

Lessons will be a combination of lecture and hands-on training. Lab time will be scheduled within the sessions as optional work periods, but are highly recommended for individual and small group learning of specific topics. A beginning project (including materials) will be given to all students during the initial session, with an additional individual project of the student’s choice, to be completed by the end of the three session class. Materials for the individual project are the responsibility of the class participants. Special pricing or considerations from local sources for materials and tools may be available; check with the instructor for details.

Laser Cutting Basics

Learn to use the 80 watt CO2 laser cutters at MakeICT. We will discuss the capabilities of the machines, safety rules, and operation in flat mode. Participants will complete a small project using Inkscape and LightBurn software.

Intermediate computer proficiency is recommended. Users should be comfortable with web browsing, Windows file folder navigation, copy and paste shortcut keys, and mouse operation.

One-Color Screen Printing

This class will focus on the basics of screen-printing; from choosing a design, exposing a screen, washing out the stencil, and applying the ink to paper. Participants will get the opportunity to practice good screen printing technique by helping to produce a run of 50 wall-worthy prints.

We'll also answer any curiosities you might have regarding multi-color printing, printing on cloth, and obtaining and using other people's artwork.

Looking for something fun to do this Summer? Jae Lear is instructing a brand new WAX SEAL workshop at MakeICT!

Regardless of your age or skill level, this hands-on class will give you all the materials you need to make unique wax seal creations. Lear Heath Studio will provide all the supplies for creating a variety of wax seal products. Using over 100 stamp designs and a spectrum of wax bead colors, attendees will be able to make earrings, magnets, keychains, fidgets, and more!

Join us from 6-8pm on Wednesday, August 14th, 2024, for our all-ages Wax Seal Workshop at MakeICT (5920 E Mt Vernon, Wichita, KS 67218).

Woodshop Authorization

Learn the basics to safely operate the major woodshop tools in this safety class including understanding the limitations of each tool, the forces created when using the tool and how to maintain safe control for improved performance. Tools covered: SawStop table saw, drill press, band saw, router table, jointer, planer, miter saw, oscillating spindle and belt / disk sanders and scroll saw. Expect at least two hours of walk-through with our tools and equipment, followed by an OPTIONAL hour of hands on practice with the tools aimed at those who have little or no practice with woodworking tools

Prerequisites: Please read the woodshop tool access policy and safety requirements on the wiki page prior to coming to class. Safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, short sleeves • Advisable: Hearing protection

Upon completion of the safety demonstration you can use this woodshop equipment for your projects whenever you work at MakeICT as a member!

Instructor may be slightly late. Please call if you get worried, number is posted in woodshop. Thanks!

Woodshop Hazardous Materials Authorization

Learn to use exotic materials safely in our shared space. Participants will learn how to clean re-claimed wood, test for lead paint, and adequately clean up after the use of exotic woods. Once authorized, participants will be allowed to use exotic woods in the woodshop at any time. Expect to get dirty. Participants are encouraged to bring respirators if they have one, though dust masks will be provided.

*This CAN be taken before being authorized for the woodshop, though the use of the tools in the space would still require Woodshop Authorization.

The instructor of this class may be slightly late. If so please be patient, if more than 5 minutes have passed or your just very anxious then use his phone number (posted in the woodshop) to call and confirm he is in route.
