This class will begin with a lecture covering the table saw in general including bench-top, portable, contractor and cabinet models, their differing anatomy, strengths and weaknesses. After the tool has been covered we will talk theory of use considering the different operations common to the machine, why they work, and their limitations. Following this we will take a 15 minute break then reconvene in the woodshop to show these processes in practice and learn (n depth) the peculiarities of our tables saw, the Sawstop Professional PCS31230.
Limited time will be made available for guided practice.

This class will begin with a lecture covering trim routers, fixed base routers, plunge routers and the router table their differing anatomy, strengths and weaknesses. Then we talk bits, in the broader categories of the seemingly infinite varieties available and what differentiates them. After the tool and tooling has been covered we will talk theory of use considering the different operations common to the machine, why they work, and their limitations. Following this we will take a 15 minute break then reconvene in the woodshop to show these processes in practice and learn (n depth) the peculiarities of our routers and router tables.

Makers should make things on Maker Monday. Turn something simple to find out what woodturning is about.

We will have several experienced woodturners, Members of South Kansas Woodturners, available. This week we will turn a penl. Join Bill Oden, President of SKW.

We wear Protective Face Shields (Safety) when turning. Dust or Cloth Masks are optional.

Kid Friendly, requires Parent with those under 16.

This exploring Woodturning Class does not require Woodshop Safety or Lathe Authorization.

Wood Lathe Safety Authorization Class

Required Authorizations: Woodshop

Plan on about 2.5 hours for the Lathe Safety Authorization Class. Much of the information will be covered quickly, with handouts available. Key pieces of safety will be hands on with examples to hold and examine, and an opportunity for you to use the tools on a workpiece to make some of the things we discuss.

This class wiil be in the 2nd Room of the wood shop.

Safety issues will include:

- Basic Lathe Checks before turning it on.
- PPE for Turning and safe clothing around spinning wood or other material
- An introduction to safe tool usage for Carbide Tools and Traditional Tools with basic information on sharpening.
- Introduction to Mounting Methods for safely attaching the workpiece to the Lathe.
- Wood Selection, considering safety and where the wood is from. We will address the MakeICT Hazardous Material Policy and the
implications for woodturning. This would include working with damaged wood, such as spalting, bark inclusions and worm holes.
Additional PPE considerations and products to address various damaged wood issues.
- We will touch on safety while sanding on the lathe.
- We will touch on safety and choices of finishing products for turned items.

A Test Out Form of this Authorization Class is available.

Class size will vary based on the number of experienced SKW Members available to assist.

Woodshop Safety Authorization is Required
Woodshop Hazardous Materials Authorization is highly recommended.

This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED additional Lab time for the present course being offered. Instructor will be available if individual help is required.

Project work time and individual help is the focus of these sessions. Alternative methods and tools may be shared during the session.
