Would there be interest in a shared MakeICT booth at the Big Gay Market? I think it’d be cool to have a table of rainbow things made at the space for sale, with some flyers out for MakeICT. Not sure if sellers would want the typical 80/20 split for consignment or if we just donate whatever proceeds we make after the booth fees back to the space.
I definitely do not make enough stuff to ever have my own booth at things like this but I can sit at a table, and I do want Wichita to know that we’re welcoming to the LGBTQIA+ community.
We’d need to decide FAST so if I get 4-5 replies here along the lines of “yes I’ll provide stuff for this table” then I will get us signed up and host.
The organizers, James and Jeff, are friends of mine and had reached out yesterday to see if MakeICT wanted to get involved. They might be willing to cut us a deal on booth rates.
After ren faire is over, I can get us in touch with them officially.
I might be interested if I could do a shift? I don’t think I’d want to do 8 hrs but maybe 4 hrs? Idk if that’s possible though. I’d be selling earrings.
I wasn’t sure if you were going to apply but I take it from that question you’re giving me a go-ahead so I have now applied!
They want to know if we have product liability insurance? what’s that? and I guess I should talk to somebody about sales tax because I know we’ve messed that up before.
@Sherry or @rustin.atkeisson do you think our participation in something like this needs board approval?
@KRABBIT I definitely see an opportunity to split up shifts!
My inclination is to say the organization doesn’t have to approve members sharing a booth and information about MakeICT. We’ll see if Rustin has a different opinion.
MakeICT wouldn’t carry product liability insurance because we don’t control what members make, that would be on the individual vendors.
IIRC Malissa posted, or at least has, a whole packet on the sales tax information - and I might have it buried in my email from last summer also. It’s also easy enough to call someone from the state with any additional questions. MakeICT won’t be selling anything so shouldn’t get involved in handling sales tax. Each vendor needs to do their own paperwork and collect and submit their own sales tax, it’s not very difficult, just a little intimidating because it involves taxes and the state.
It’s also under Classroom committee Vendor events on the Drive. I believe we’ve uploaded all the Tax information we’ve received there.
Some events require each vendor to carry liability insurance. I have a policy for myself that cost about $250 a year. It’s $2 million in coverage. The cheapest I found for one event was $175 so I decided to get it for the year. I can share the company information if needed.
I’m not terribly interested in selling things I make, so I’ll just consider it an info booth for my own part. It’s not worth it to set up my own sales tax ID and get insurance just to donate the funds to the space, you know?
If any other vendors are set up with that stuff then jump in.
I’ll find out. I checked “no” on the insurance question so we’ll see!
The more I think about it, if I was going to make things for donations then i can just make things and ask for donations, no sales needed! I’m off to laser cut some flags
Talk to the event organizers first. They may have prepared for an event sales tax package, which gives each vendor specific instructions for collecting and remitting sales tax.
