Woodshop suggestions

As we use the woodshop, we often come across things that make us think, “Wouldn’t it be nice if…” Or maybe we’ve seen maintenance items that need attention. (If you do see maintenance that needs to be done, please don’t hesitate to bring that to my attention right then and there.) This thread is meant to be kind of a collaborative workspace where we can post ideas for improvement or just stuff that would be cool. It’s not meant as a list of things that will be done, though hopefully we can accomplish some of them. If you have ideas or comments on somebody else’s ideas, let’s list them here. To keep this thread from getting derailed, let’s start another thread specific to the idea to discuss it. Let’s keep it constructive, but that doesn’t mean we can’t point out the downsides of something. And let’s remember that this is a community space, meaning that just because something would be helpful to you, that doesn’t mean that everybody else will agree.

I’ll start:

Dust collector automation - I would like to set up the dust collector so that it turns on automatically when a tool that uses it is turned on. (James has already started to look at how to accomplish this, though his idea differs a bit from mine.)

Fix electrical cords - I know that at one time there were a few cords that were missing ground prongs. To the best of my knowledge, that’s still the case. I see this as a safety issue and intend to fix this immediately

Storage / labeling - the shelves are currently a bit of a mess. I know that labeling does not automatically mean that tools or supplies will get put away, but I hope that if we can do a better job of “a place for everything and everything in its place” maybe it will help all of us spend less time guessing where it might have been put.

Hose reel reorientation - this is something that I have been meaning to do, but clearly hasn’t been a priority. The way the hose reel is currently mounted makes it difficult to wind up the hose. Rotating it 90 degrees so it’s facing toward the shop will let us put a handle on it so that the hose can be easily wound back up.

Clean air filters - we have air filtration in each of the woodshops. This is not the shop vacs or the dust collector, but the rectangular Jet boxes mounted to the ceiling. I know that the one above the shopbot was cleaned a few months ago, but it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in a few years.

Add dust collection to the Shop Bot - In a perfect world every machine that produces dust would have some sort of dust collection that grabs 100% of that dust so it never gets into the air. Effective dust collection has always been difficult to accomplish on the Shop Bot. It gets in the way and ultimately gets removed. I believe that some is better than none. Let’s get a dust collector attached to the shop bot so that at least some of the fine dust that currently gets thrown into the air gets grabbed at the source. Even if it doesn’t catch it all, the less that makes it into the air, the less the air filters have to scrub.

Make a list of consumables - maybe this exists somewhere already, but I haven’t seen it. Basically, what I would like to do is make a list of consumables, especially things like blades, and set a quantity to keep on hand for use so that we aren’t having to scramble to get one at the last minute. An example of this being an issue is the Saw Stop brake cartridge. Without one on hand, we have to run to the store when it is needed. I believe we have been getting them from the Big Tool Store, which is fine, but if they are closed, then we are stuck until Monday. With my travel schedule, I might not be able to get there when they are open for days and ordering will typically take at least 2 days via Amazon.

Update tool list on the wiki - over the years we have added tools and some have disappeared. I don’t know what the current status is, so I’d like to update the list and the wiki.

Downdraft table - we have a sanding pad and a dust extractor, but maybe a good addition to the space would be a downdraft table to help keep more dust from getting into the air.

Woodshop machinery toolkit - this would be a set of tools gathered specifically for performing routine maintenance on the machines in the space. Things like the correct Torx bit for carbide inserts, wrenches for changing blades, etc.

Replace spoilboard on Shop Bot - it’s raining today, so it’s a bad day to move MDF, but the existing spoilboard is starting to look pretty used up.

Flatten the assembly table that is not flat - this may not be doable without additional bracing under the table since I think it’ll take a good 3/8", maybe more, to get the table flat. Maybe we can mill away just one end and add a piece of MDF to make up the difference. Looking for ideas to make this table more useful again.

Magnetic switches for machines with moving parts - some of the machinery already will not turn back on if power is removed and then reapplied, but I don’t think this applies to everything.

Paint window latches to make it easier to see if they are latched - one common problem across the whole of MakeICT is windows left open or unlatched. While this won’t help in cases where nobody even looked, making the latches easier to see should make the process of checking faster and easier.

Reduce openable windows to two - in addition to making it easier to see if windows are latched, I would like to seal all but two windows in each space. This will make it even easier to tell if all are closed and latched. It also makes it easier to add some sort of warning if they aren’t.

Add visual or audible indicator to alert that windows are open - I am thinking a light or a buzzer to let the last person out, and thus the person who hopefully turns off all the lights, know that there’s a window not latched. This would likely require a different system for latching, like a deadbolt of some sort.

Shortly after we moved into this building we were given a downdraft table but I don’t think it was kept.

I set course of educational classes would be useful. There are many people that want to make things but don’t know where to start. I am in the process of developing a few, and making PDF for them.

Hand tool storage is lacking, and most of our chisels are of suboptimal quality, with very dull blades. An upkeep / sharpening schedule or even class would be helpful. In the same vein, we seem to have very limited options for sharpening, relying mostly on grinders, a discontinued model of Worksharp and a few burned up diamond stones of dubious quality.

I agree that we need more classes. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to rely on help to make that happen. I’m just not in town enough to do all the classes that everybody wants and still get laundry done before I’m on the next plane.

My biggest suggestion is around the scrap policy. I feel like the woodshop in the old space used to have nice stocks of scrap material that we could use for projects - I built some whole little free libraries out of scraps! Kind of like the laser cutter, there was always something to cut if you aren’t picky.

Slowly, it turned into a space where people put their names on their leftover material and just left it around indefinitely. It meant the area was cluttered, material didn’t move, the people didn’t come back. I thought a LOT about just freaking using some piece because it was cheap, I knew I could pay to replace it if somebody called me out, it had been there forever so I probably would NOT be called out. But in the old space we had a lead even go to security to help figure out why someone used a scrap that someone had left there forever - rather than tell the member that they should have taken their dang wood home. So I try to hold back.

And then eventually we’d snap, have a clean up day where we tossed all those bits in the trash, and they were never used for anybody’s projects. Dang it.

So - I’m mostly just really grateful that there’s a LEAD and I don’t want to come across as a critic, but I would be really clear with people that there’s, like, a 2 or 7 day limit on scraps. No date written on your thing? It’s a scrap. Date past? It’s a scrap. Hey everybody, look at all these scraps! And we mark certain areas as intentional “anything left here is scrap!” places for all to use.

At one time, any wood under the table saw or under the shop bot was there for anyone to use.

AFAIK, the area under the outfeed table has always been free for the taking. The rest of the shop is a mess as far as that goes. There are a bunch of “tree” in the West shop that I’m sure has been there for months, for example. I like how ceramics does a monthly purge. It’s a little easier there since there are designated places for work that’s at specific stages, but I’m sure we can do better than we are now.

This isn’t a new problem, btw. I know the metal rack at Douglas always had stuff on it with dates from months before. We tend to be too lenient, or “nice” about it, I think.

insofar as sharpening goes, id reach out to skw folk as a lot of them are well versed in sharpening as wood gouges for turning need it often.

I just built this mag switch fence for my personal drill press. It works super well and I think it would be useful for the shop.

Do you know of a place where any kind of rule about storing wood is in writing? I know the woodshop access policy doesn’t say anything about it, as it shouldn’t. But I haven’t located a document that says how long materials or projects can be stored.

We had a good discussion on Saturday about the state of the woodshop and things that folks would like to see done. In addition to the ideas I have listed, there were others brought up for consideration.

I have had multiple persons request that the floor sweep be reinstalled. If done, I would like to place it in the center of the room so that if somebody has chips from drilling holes on the drill press, the pile of dust doesn’t need to be swept all the way across the room.

James is already working on automating the dust collector, so I have put my efforts to do so on hold.

The shopbot is oriented with the power switch in the most inaccessible location. I would like to flip it around, but on the suggestion of Doug, the home switches should be moved to the new near end and LinuxCNC updated to reflect that change. The other, more sensible, solution is to relocate the power switch to the end of the machine that’s accessible. It would also probably be a good idea to move the emergency stop switch from sitting on top of the PC to the frame of the machine.

Kim is going to look at what it takes to address the Z limit switch which I think should be a simple as rotating the limit switch 90 degrees so the lever is oriented vertically. (yes, nothing is really ever that simple.)

I would like to do something about the pile of plywood under the shopbot. A sheetgoods rack/cart will provide a home for the sheets there, but I don’t know why they exist. Was this material that the woodshop bought for whatever needs the woodshop might have? Is there a good reason not to use the auxiliary table that is on the floor for other more useful purposes? As far as I know, it hasn’t left the space under the shopbot since before we moved.

It was suggested that we get some chucks for the wood lathes. I’ll look into this, but not being a woodturner, I would like suggestions. I do not plan to buy the best there is, partly due to budget, but sadly, also because the nicer something is, the more likely it seems to grow legs.

I will be buying another broom for smooth floors as the red-bristled brooms don’t do well on the tile.

Larry let me know that we need to get air plumbed to the east shop, if for nothing else, so we have it available for equipment maintenance.

I built a bracket to flip the air hose reel so it faces the room and can be used more easily. It still needs a handle, so if somebody wants to turn one with a 9/16" diameter pocket in the end to recess a 3/8" bolt head and a 13/32" hole through the middle, approximately 3 1/2" long, that would be great. I’ll provide the bolt and nuts.

Combining those last two items, I may replace the manual hose reel with the automatic one that was on the shelf. It needs a new whip hose but makes winding up the hose even easier. The manual reel could then be moved to the east shop when air gets added there.

Thanks. I do want to make sure that if it was published that I am able to update it.
