Table saw 2025-04-26

It has been reported to me that the blade will not lower on the saw stop. I do not know if I will be able to come check it out today. I will not be back in Wichita for a while yet. I will try to look at it as soon as I can.

If nobody gets to it before I do, I will take a quick look on Sunday afternoon and post something here.

Just to note for everyone, I was briefly in there last night giving a tour, and the person in the woodshop said that it was working. They mentioned that they thought people possibly didn’t know how to unlock the elevation wheel? ^1 They demonstrated lowering it a short bit, so I think it’s good, but it wouldn’t hurt for someone else to double check that it’s all good.

^1 For everyone’s reference if they don’t know the proper process: See page 40/Adjusting the Blade Height

I looked at the Table Saw and although it does technically work, it goes up a lot harder than it should, or that it did the last time I used it. It goes down easier than up (yes, I did remember to unlock it). Larry was with me and said there’s a worm drive that loads up with sawdust and has to be cleaned out and re-lubed periodically.

So I’m not taking it out of service, but I will work on it Monday afternoon before Maker Monday. Larry has done this operation before, and will be there too, he says it’s a two-man job. I want to see if there’s anything that can be done to alleviate this problem, apparently the manufacturer thinks not, but I’m a little more optimistic, heh.

Thank you for taking a look at it. I don’t know if we have any dry lube or not so do what you can. I’ll order some to have on hand. I think this needs to be a routine PM. I wasn’t able to make it over today, but it sounds like you have it under control. I’ll be back from my with trip Thursday night so whatever else might need done, I can jump on it then. Thanks again for your help! And thanks, @jameslancaster for checking in on it. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Larry and I worked on the saw, the blade lift is OK again. Two points:

  1. There’s a gas spring there that might be slightly weak, but
not weak enough to replace yet, we should live with it for now.
We can replace it later on, when it gets weaker.

  2. The depth handwheel drives a 90 degree worm drive which runs uncovered. If we could make a 3D printed shell to put over the worm drive, we could put more grease there, and keep sawdust out. There’s already a hole for a mounting screw. I’ll look into this.

Anyway, not perfect, but we’re back in business.

Thanks again, Kim and Larry, for your help!

Seems like a great application for a bellows. I don’t know how much room there is, though.

Looks like regular old axle grease or similar is recommended. Dry lube doesn’t provide enough lubrication.
