I have a portable USB Solid State Drive (1Tb). My laptop went to sleep while the drive was plugged in. When I tried to re-connect it, it would not be recognized. It was also warmer than usual and the lights were just blinking.
The first step would be to open it up and look for visible signs of a component failure. Then separate the drive from the enclosure and use a different usb adapter to see if the drive is OK.
I would bet these are signs of a filesystem error caused by the power disruption and not a physical flaw in the SSD. Your files are likely still intact and recoverable, but some kind of disk repair utility will be required (chkdsk is included with Windows). If you want to learn how to do this, bring the drive and your laptop to the Electronics room at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
