Snapmaker U1 Watchful Owl

Since I’ve started printing on the Snapmaker U1 printers both at the Fab Lab, and at home, I have been more open to printing files that I would have otherwise never considered. This owl is one of those prints. With four colors, and most layers having at least 3 of the 4 colors involved, there are over 3000 color swaps involved in printing one of these.

On the vast majority of 4 color capable 3D printers currently available, this involves a considerable amount of time and filament. I sliced this, just for fun, for my Bambu Lab P1S printer, and compared that to what the Snapmaker can do. The Snapmaker is less than half of the time, 60 hours vs 132 for the Bambu Lab, the cost is half ($16 vs $32), and the amount of filament used is half. It still takes nearly 1 KG (roughly 2.2 lbs) of filament to print this, but I don’t feel quite as bad paying $16 to print this vs paying $32.

For those that do use the printers, I’ve also attached screen shots of the slicing results for both the Snapmaker U1 and the Bambu Lab P1S, so you can see the savings involved by not having the machine purge between color swaps.
