Small bandsaw has new blade!

Small bandsaw has new blade and adjustment! Running smooth and quiet now. It had a stuck bearing that was rubbing blade and ruining teeth.

The guides should not be in contact with any teeth.

@whateg01 Is it correct that the guides should be very close but not quite touching the blade on all sides? I’m wondering if it would be best, for us less-than-experienced in band saw blade set-up, to use a feeler gauge to make sure the guides are just slightly away from the blade?

“Barely touching” on side rollers and rear support roller should be .016 away–fold a dollar bill in half twice for thickness according to manual.

There are 2 sets of these guide rollers, one above table and one below. Also the side rollers should be behind “gullet” of cutter tooth on band so they only contact the smooth portion of band.

If the band blade is constantly spinning one or multiple guide rollers when nothing is being cut something probably needs adjusted.

Or if the bandsaw is noisy something is wrong.

Thanks Jesse, .016" seems to be farther away from the blade than I would expect. But I’ve never had to adjust the guides in the machine shops I’ve worked in, so I wasn’t sure. I’ve changed blades, but just never had to mess with the guides. I also assume the blades have the teeth set to the right and left like many other saw blades and that would be why you would want the guides to run just behind the gullet.

Yes Dan. In this case the teeth were against roller, and roller was locked up so a new blade would dull quickly. Metal bandsaws may set up differently not sure.

If anyone changes the blade they should look at roller guides. If a different width blade is installed then rollers must be adjusted.

I’m really not sure if there’s a difference either between metal and wood bandsaws. I would guess the setup should be the same since they do the same thing, just in different materials.
I’ll keep in mind about checking closer on the guides. I appreciate all the information you and others give to anyone wanting to learn.
