Sketching with Clay

So i’m better at doing figures with clay than illustrating them. I wanted to do illustrations utelizing texture mapping in Photoshop with sculptures i had made, onece again riding the line between organic and digital, my favorite place to be.
This is part of what will accompany a poem across a two page spread in my zine, which should be finished before Thanksgiving. Pics in order of completion. This stuff takes a while.

That reminds me of the wild thornberrys

So i added the rough shape and depth of the body today. Final step will be rough hands, then shimmying up the final details, such as the crown and any smaller finery, before photography and texture mapping.
Laying down these rough shapes for the body took about 2 hours. Even if i had sketched the image in full beforehand, i’m guessing i would have only shaved off about 45 minutes. Just pummeling the clay into a malleable condition takes a lot out of you. Plastelina is rather firm from the start. The mineral oil helps though.
I really like the wavy texture the ball tipped tool provided as i was smoothing out the chunks of clay into a single surface. Might work with that into the finished project.
The background might wind up being made of construction paper. It also might be fun, to photograph different types of fabric and papers, and see which ones look best during the texture mapping process.
I didn’t really know how to draw a king, so after making the head i just riffed off of pictures of Napoleon in his coronation robes.
That’s all for now.
