The Shopbot spindle speed was acting strange tonight. It sounded like the speed was varying significantly while there was practically no load on the bit. (Cutting maybe a 1/16th of an inch in depth with a 1/4" bit). It stopped completely on me twice while cutting a 1/8th inch depth. Wood being cut was mahogany.
I will not be able to check it out until tomorrow.
This could indicate real need of maintenance and continued use could result in irreparable failure. Please consider the machine down.
I will be in as soon as possible to lock out the ShopBot Router.

Dave, when you get a chance please share some more details. Was it sound that tipped you off? The cutting action? Was it cycling through speeds quickly, evrnly, randomly? Anything you can think of to add.

It was mostly the sound- it was always cutting. The sound varied the entire time it was cutting- it didn’t matter whether it was cutting cross-grain or with the grain. The cutting speed did seem to be slower when it sounded slower/ bogged-down.

Sounds like the bearings need replaced or the armature needs tightened. I’ll take a look at it with Aaron Thursday evening.

@doug.wilson I don’t know what your availability is, but I think I might be able to make it out briefly to help and learn this afternoon. Also, I won’t be able to make your class tonight as my band has a show and apparently we play at 6.
@doug.wilson @squarenuts I’ve been out of town for a couple days. If the ShopBot is still down, I’d like to be there to learn how to repair it if our schedules allow.

I had to swap out the router from the router table, so the shopbot is working. I should be able to fix the bad router tuesday night (if repairable). It likely just needs new bearings.

@doug.wilson I saw the old router sitting in the room. Did you have any time to diagnose? I’d be glad to help if I can.
I just got her all the tuned up! Good for another 10 million spins.
