Are there any plans to do a shop bot authorization class any time soon?
I didnt see anything on the schedule but i would be interested in taking the class.
I hope to get one done soon but I’m on the road for work most of next month. I also need to figure out what to do about the cam software which is needed to generate the program for the shopbot to run
Sometime in August I will try doing some tests on the Shopbot using FreeCAD, so you’ll know whether that is an alternative. (I believe it is.)
Any update on this? I’d love to use the shopbot for a project needed by early Sept.
No update. I still want to try to get a class on the calendar but as of now, I’m traveling every week this month and at least 2 weeks in September so far.
I think I’m going to try to do something next month between work travel. But, it’ll be focused on the shopbot itself. I will not be covering any of the cad/cam requirements. I know there are others teaching fusion still. I saw that Kim was going to look at another program. Doug always used easel as an easy way to get a part drawn up. So there are options.
I’m usually free anytime at all. I have limited experience over the years with 3D things like AutoCAD and SketchUp, and some 2D graphic design, as well as a computer background. Even better, I’m hoping to use the open source DXL files that go with the book Make: Design for CNC. I haven’t ordered the book yet and I noticed some other Make books in FabLab, if anyone knows if we have that book
You can start with dxl (I don’t know what that is, unless you meant dxf) if you want but you need a g-code file to make parts on a CNC machine.
I knew I should have looked up that extension before I said it, and the zip file has some other things as well. Regardless, I’m ready to figure out yet another way to cut things at MakeICT.
The files are here if anyone is interested.
That’s pretty cool. What does it do to allow for differences in material thickness?
I’m also wanting to start teaching shop bot and cnc plasma authorizations somewhat soon. Once I am up and going on that there will be more opportunities to be authorized for those tools.

Looking forward to it!
The plans are for 3/4 in, with a couple projects requiring some 1/2in. I went ahead and ordered the book as well.
Class is on the schedule. Please note, as indicated in the description, this will only go over the operation of the CNC router. We will not do any CAD/CAM in this class. You can still take the class, but you’ll have to be able to create your own program (G-code) in order to use the machine.
Sooooo realized I don’t have the wood shop authorization yet
Thank you, all who attended the shopbot authorization class! It was great to see everybody so excited to watch a computer do our work for us!
I am going to work with Ladeana to come up with a CAD/CAM class suited to making parts on the shopbot. I think most of what we do will carry over to the plasma table, too. More to come…

I know there were others who were unable to sign up. I will try to get another class on the calendar in the next few weeks. I need to catch up on getting my work travel planned, then I should have a better idea of my availability.
Thanks, Dave
