Sanding dust

TL;DR - USE THE DUST EXTRACTOR

I’ve noticed over the last few months that a lot is sanding seems to be going on. While it’s great to know that some people are able to see a project through to that point, the fine dust created gets airborne and lands on everything. Worse, it gets breathed in my anybody in the woodshop. While you might be wearing a respirator while sanding, somebody coming in to get a tool or do something else also has to deal with it. There is a dust extractor meant specifically for keeping that dust from getting into the air. The first extractor should connect directly to the hand sanders. If you need help figuring out how to operate it, please let me know.

You’re talking about the big yellow DeWalt HEPA vacuumesque device that says “For Sanding Use Only” or something along those lines, right? Maybe I’m dumb or blind, but I couldn’t get it to attach securely to the DeWalt sander. Seemed to need an adapter that would securely connect the hose to the sander. The hose sort of fit and would mostly stay on while the suction was active. I was able to use it for the small amount of sanding I did but it wasn’t super convenient. Hopefully I’m just missing something.

On a similar note, what vacuum hose connects properly to the router table in the East woodshop?

Yeah that’s the one. If there’s an adapter missing or something, I’ll look into it. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

I don’t recall what hose size the table in the east woodshop has but I thought the one shop vac had been attached to it at one point. I’ll look into that too.

Edit: I looked at the hose. The locking ring has gone missing. I’ll work on a remedy.

I have ordered parts to fix the hose. In the meantime, I’ve printed a collar for the hose. It’s a little tighter than planned but it does function.

The new part arrived and it’s installed. Please use the dust extractor whenever possible.

Notice the two little marks around the perimeter. Twisting the collar to align with these marks locks and unlocks the hose coupler so it can be installed.
