Rolling (looped) video for big screens

I’m working on acquiring one or more fairly large flat-screen TVs for the makerspace, one in a prominent spot inside for members (perhaps near the ceiling above the fablab area, facing the front door), and the other in the front window, facing the street.

The inside display would show upcoming events, news, volunteer opportunities, and the like.

The outside display would be to tell passers-by about MakeICT – what a makerspace is, what we do, and selected events of interest.

I want to put together a team of our talented members that would come up with, primarily, the video that runs in the front window. Think of it as a commercial that features MakeICT. We’d need a team, with one person to coordinate, and with others to contribute by way of designing the look and feel of the video, as well as the content and graphics. This is a volunteer opportunity that can make a real difference for us. If the video is good, we can also use it elsewhere – Facebook, other social media, and perhaps we could even run a version of it on local TV.

If you’re interested and would like to help, please post here. Once we have a coordinator, that person can help guide the team to work together to make our video. It might even be a chance for us to test drive a new area of the makerspace - audio/visual production!

This has long been discussed and would be great if it finally happened.

Sizing, are you saying bigger than the TV i put in the lounge or same? Mostly curiosity, but if size is known people might have similar unused TVs laying around.

50 inches or bigger. We’d love some donated TVs that size!

I think the most important feature should be that it be simple for anyone to alter the content. That will be key to getting people to keep it up to date.

For the inside one, yes. One way to do it is to set up a Pi to pull events from WA through the API. We can also put announcements into files in a shared directory that can be added to by authorized people. The files inside can be text files or complete graphic slides. If it is in the directory, it runs. We actually could even code a date in the filename, so when it reaches that date, the Pi deletes the file from the directory automatically. Not too difficult to implement in the first place, and dead simple for end users. The Payment Kiosk can also be set up to draw from that for announcements down the road.
