Prusa 1 Printer Power Supply

Came over here this afternoon and found this printer down. It appears that the power supply is suffering a brown-out when trying to heat up, causing the machine to reboot.

I didn’t see any spare power supplies in the cabinet to try. Wasn’t sure if the printer underneath the cabinet had a power supply that was sufficient for Prusa 1 or not.

Not sure what else I could do with this…

You could check the resistance of the heater cartridge. There might be a short causing the reset.

I would need to know where to check that, and what results I am looking for. Also not sure when I am going to be able to get back over there again.

Should be about halfway through this page. I may be able to get over there sometime in the next couple of days?

Resistance on the heat bed is 2.9 ohm which is within spec of 2.0 to 4.0.

The hot end heater is 0.2 ohms which is well outside the spec of 12.3 to 15.1.

The heater block is also sitting in there at an angle, which I am quite sure is not good. See attached photo.

I am guessing this is going to require repair. I know how to do this repair on my three printers at home, but this appear to be a bit more involved.

I looked through the cabinet, but don’t see any more heater blocks. Not even sure if there’s more that might have to be done, seeing that the block is not sitting in there straight. On my Sovol, it’s a matter of an easily accessible set screw. Might be the same on here but haven’t looked into it and don’t have time to dig that deep this morning.

This will take a while to fix, but it is doable. The heater cartridge needs replaced and you’ll have to take the hot end apart because that heater block has likely broken loose from the heatbreak screw or the heatbreak screw has broken loose from the heatsink. Guessing there was a fail at some point where the bottom of the hot end got encrusted.

There should be extra heater cartridges in the cabinet. If not, hit up @xrunner to order some. Just make sure you use a 24v one or you’ll blow a fuse. Don’t ask me how I know

Text me if you need help with it.

I saw many many thermistors and various other parts but not a single heater block. I checked all the boxes and parts cases and didn’t see any in there, so may need to order one.

I at least understand the problem. Just need the parts and some time to disassemble things and fix it.

Is there a heater block on the Prusa that’s sitting on the bottom shelf? I believe that one is for parting-out.

I assume those should be ordered from Prusa, so if anyone would want to make a list of items to be ordered it would help spread the cost of the overseas shipping.
