Oxy / Acetylene Torch

Hello. I was in earlier this week, and both oxygen and acetylene bottles were empty for the torch. Any plans to refill them? Thanks!

They’ve been empty for many months. I don’t think they plan to refill them. Imho, the torch, hoses, and regulators should be removed and put away and the bottles 3-nerded.

In that case, if there is no plan to maintain it, could I purchase it from MakeICT? Or could I pay to have the bottles refilled?

You might have to email John Cummings. Doesn’t look like I can tag him by name, but I’ll tag @Metalshop , which should also go to him.

I’ll talk with John and see if we can get the bottles filled. The metalshop did allocate funds to refill those tanks once a quarter.

I thought we had refilled the tanks maybe a month ago, but that setup isn’t really meant for heavy cutting or brazing, it’s more meant for annealing. (There’s a reason why we took the boiler out with a plasma cutter and not oxy/acetylene)

The tanks are a bit expensive to buy outright and I highly recommend AGAINST 3-Nerding/taking offers on them unless someone/somehow we ended up with a bigger set of oxygen tanks.

The issue I have seen is people leaving the valves open when done. Same as everything else - people not cleaning up/putting things away/etc after they are done. I don’t think they have been filled in at least 6 months.

eta: just checked and I posted about the valves being left open in May. Every time I have looked since then, the bottles have been empty.
