Please do not bring Treated Lumber into the woodshop at MakeICT. I found this Treated Lumber on the free for use table.
there used to be a sign up at the Douglas location stating that this was a no go. Is any of this touched upon for the woodshop safety/orientation classes?
Yes, I tell people every woodshop safety class. And we have multiple signs on the wall.
this is unfortunately nothing new. Ive caught people turning this stuff in the past and warned them not to get caught with it. Im not going to advocate for creating a tattle tale culture in the wood shop. However, i feel its best that it should be stressed by anyone using the woodshop to enforce the rule by quietly pulling someone aside should they be witness to seeing it being in the woodshop and telling said person “yeah, we can’t bring that in here, you could get kicked out.”
Pressure treated wood products contain wet anti-fungal and anti-microbial compounds that are often copper, arsenic, chromium, and ammonia based, this wet compound aerosolizes during common wood working techniques like cutting and sanding. A fine dust containing the compounds is also created. These compounds are then readily absorbed in the lungs or through the skin and long term exposure can represent real health risks. The main concern here is not that you could get kicked out but that in an enclosed space you are creating a significant health risk for yourself AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT USES THE SHOP AFTER YOU!
Especially, those of us that empty the dust collector.
