New Skill Unlocked: Laser Appliques

Well, I learned a new skill today — and it’s a game changer.

I’m making appliqué dinosaurs and unicorns for some upcoming quilts, and started by cutting out the outlines. Originally, I planned to hand-sew the details… but then I had a wild idea: what if I laser-burned the details directly into Minky fabric?

Turns out — it works beautifully and it’s safe.
I double-checked that Minky is laser-compatible, and it passed the test.

On the far left are the plain cutouts
On the right, you’ll see the new laser-detailed versions.

New method of appliqué officially unlocked. Can’t wait to see how these look stitched into the final quilt.

That’s amazing! And it didn’t even leave smokey residue on the white?

I’ve used fabric with some heat and bond backing to make iron-ons too.

I would be interested in knowing how well it washes.

So, no smoky residue but there was a slight smell from the burning. I am going to tumble the material with some dryer sheets and see if that helps.
