Materials cart

Aaron built a heavy duty flat cart for moving stuff in and out and around the woodshop. It works well for what it is, but it has limitations. While its large and allows for large items to be moved, it won’t fit through a standard door, so items to be moved on it still have to be carried to a vehicle in the parking lot or by the west doors. The other limitation of concern is that it really only works well for bulk items. In the interest of making the cart more useful for a wider variety of tasks, I would like to modify the cart.

I want to narrow it so that it can be wheeled all the way to a waiting vehicle. This should be a relatively simple task.

The other thing I want to do is add the ability to move sheet goods. There are a couple ways that this could be done, and I don’t know that one way is inherently better. Below are a couple different styles of panel/drywall cart that come to mind. I want to make it so that the “panel attachment” can be removed for moving bulky stuff and installed for moving sheet goods. I want this to be able to be done relatively easily by any member and without tools.

Another possible thing, though this is a little bit pie-in-the-sky and goes against my newfound philosophy of not letting perfect get in the way of good, is something that can carry the panel in, but can also flip to horizontal to allow the sheet to more easily be transferred to a pickup, for example. Something like this, but adapted to my thoughts above:

Is there a general preference among members for one style over the other?

I had hoped to get one like the top one as a donation from Lowe’s. I really disliked move sheet goods when Terrance got sheet goods from his work.

I would like to avoid getting another cart that has to be stowed somewhere. If we had one like that, we could adapt the rack portion though

There’s rumblings of replacing that west end set of doors, which may resolve this issue.

It’s still a little ways to carry a full sheet of 3/4" ply/OSB/MDF/etc.

You might look at Maker pipe They have a quick release clamp that might work for easy removal without tools (its like a bicycle quick release)

It would be pretty cool to have overhead doors in the metal shop and the wood shop for moving projects and materials in and out!
