I’ve used both cutters now and have question about Luigi.
It seems to move very quickly on straight lines which changes how much it cuts through. Is there to keep this from happening?
If I remember right, Luigi is optimized for cutting and Mario is optimized for engraving… maybe it has something to do with that?
what speed are you using for your line settings in light burn?
In the class I just had with the fabulous fab lab teacher @kim , she said if you reduce your speed to 15 or 20 you will get a cleaner cut.
Lines I start at 20 spd, 50 pwr. I went up to 60 and it still wasn’t cutting through the straight lines. The curves where it slowed down we’re fine.
yes - always try slowing down the speed a bit before you increase power.
that said, I noticed the other day in class that mario wasn’t cutting as well as it used to, I can try to make some time to re-check its alignment/lens but it might not be this week.
Copy, speed before power.
You might try a project on Luigi though. The straight lines seem significantly faster than curves.
I noticed Luigi wasn’t cutting as well as it should on Maker Monday but didn’t have time to look at it after it was available. I’m hoping to get in over the weekend to look too.
Is there calibration that should be happening on these machines? I know the massive printers that I used when I worked at the print shop needed to be calibrated after so many runs… if this is something that has a manual, or it can be instructed, I would be happy to share in the task of getting this done on the regular to keep the machines in best working order for all.
Fair. I’d be happy to learn and help as well.

straight lines are always faster than curves, on both, it’s just inherent to the machines, they slow down around curves. so if you notice a difference or notice tiny jiggly lines instead of straight lines, it’s a sign to slow down.
we could definitely use more people helping with machine calibration stuff! @xrunner I definitely can’t do saturday, but might be able to do sunday afternoon or evening, maybe we could set up a time and see who could join us?
lens cleaning, bed leveling, mirror alignment - all things that can really mess up cuts, need to be done regularly, and I admit I haven’t been helping as much as I should!
Would Sunday 5pm work for you?
Yes! See you Sunday at 5pm
I will try to be there at 5 on Sunday, but I have already committed to come up on Saturday to help get the paper cutter lined up. I can’t promise.
I’ll be working unfortunately.

Hey @GeekyBeth and @xrunner could we move this party to 7pm today? I might be running back out to ren fair with the fam.
I noticed that the red machine front covers are in a sorry state. It’s disappointing that I’m a space full of people who make stuff, the best we could do, or at least have done, is a bunch of tape.
The front and rear covers are designed to be removable for working with longer stock, but afaik, we have never really permitted their use in that manner. Is there any reason that some sort of fastener couldn’t be used to more permanently close the front covers?
I was thinking something that resembled the keyed locks but really a simple bolt with an arm that catches the frame of the machine would be plenty sufficient. If there’s no reason to not do that, lmk. Otherwise I’ll plan on making something when I get back from my work trip this week.
Thank you, Kim for meeting to night and getting the lasers back to cutting well!
I agree that it looks really bad and we could do better.
I like the style of latches that are on other panels on the lasers - especially the ones that have the triangle in the middle for the ‘key’. TBH, I haven’t spent any meaningful time looking but what are those latches called? I assume we could find something suitable on-line.
Ok, I will refrain from “fixing” it and let you fix it right.
Those won’t fit the factory double D holes which have an od of 3/4" (19mm), but maybe that will help your search.
