Finally had some time to mess with Mario. Did some digging in the “Laser tools” menu. In “device settings” found the spot to change back to metric for the rotary (and saw Enable Z axis” was on again, turned it off), then found “Save/load rotary settings with project files” was not selected, turned that on, then changed the whole thing to “Mario Ethernet” rather than “Mario USB”, set to 288 at 1.0 mm and project turned out great.
