Lost PLA casting

This was done today. Lost PLA casting of a human heart in aluminum. I’m thinking I want to do a translucent red coating.

I want to learn how to do this. I bet casting small pewter figurines or jewelry with this technique would make a fun monthly 2 day class.

I bet casting small pewter figures would look good on a DnD map…

The trick is to make a large gate on top to give the melted PLA somewhere to go. I think for the next one I do, I’ll hot glue a block of styrofoam onto my PLA piece. It will just flash away when the hot metal goes in, and will leave a reasonably large space for what’s left of the PLA. When the casting is cooled, I can just cut off whatever metal is left in the gate.
