Lifting the file on the back stroke

It’s accepted practice to lift the metal file on the backstroke so as to preserve the life of the file… but does it really save the file like we’ve all been told? This video suggests it’s a myth.

I watched that when he posted it. I’m impressed with the test apparatus

Lol I saw that too. I’m actually really curious what everyone’s take on this is.

I suppose some people will see the video and change their view on lifting the file. But many people will probably still stick to the notion that you have to lift the file or you will damage it.

Its interesting. I’ve only lifted on the backstroke on questionable quality files like Harbor Freight, because they need all the help they can get.

Some people say if you leave it on the stock on the backstroke it cleans the teeth. I have seen long discussions on this subject on blacksmithing boards.

Yeah he addresses that too and from his tests that also appears to be a myth.

I was also lead to believe that one can sharpen a file using vinegar.

Really any mild acid. Was curious if anyone has tried it.
