What would make an object not fill from a dxf or a svg it drops it keeps the line but no fill

For future reference, the issue was caused by using the “Stroke to path” option in Inkscape. This creates a new line on each edge of the stroke and adds a fill between the lines. This looks the same in Inkscape, but causes the laser to just engrave the lines rather than filling in the whole object. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, depending on what you want. In general you want to use the “Object to path” option, which just converts SVG objects into simple paths that the laser software can understand.
