Hello Makers - John Nicholas was a kind wood turner who was very involved at MakeICT for several years. He helped with our new building, held wood turning make-and-take events, and I will really miss him.
He fought a valiant fight with a rare aggressive cancer, first found in the summer of 2023. He passed on Jan. 19, 2025, at the age of 75.
His family will be holding a memorial service that I will try to attend tomorrow at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
It was a really lovely service. Crowded! I had to sit in the balcony and park in the grass - he was in everything, the makerspace, wood turners, rotary club, Iris club… the person next to me knew him because he helped out with the recycling club at the school. former employees who worked for him at Westwood Manor came up to tell us he was the best boss. and he was really involved in his church. and everywhere he went he made things!
At the center of the church there is this giant mobile that sure enough, he made/coordinated with the youth group, who helps make ornaments and change them out every season. it adds a contemplative, peaceful ambiance.
This week has been a tough one in the world. Sitting for an hour thinking about how to make a million little differences helped me. I’m so thankful for all the people I get to meet through makeict.
John was my instructor for the wood turning class and several Maker Mondays make-and-take events. He was always patient and informative. He will be missed.
I didn’t see the OP until this morning but am glad some of you were able to attend his service.
