We have authorized MakeICT members for basic Jewelry Lab use, and will continue to do this.
What is our priority for authorizing members.
Right now; bench work, Ring making, cabbing machine, lost wax casting, are our main focus.
Where should we place our emphasis?
Several bench authorizations have been done in the last few months but classes for the cabbing and casting have not been available, so I would suggest offering a couple of those to give the people who have completed their bench authorizations an opportunity to get access to the other equipment, then try to keep the distribution of the classes more balanced once the people who currently have the bench authorization have had a chance to get the casting and cabbing if they want it. I would take the cabbing class if it was offered.
For jewelry “outsiders” (like me) who may be following this thread, and wondering what a “cabbing machine” is (I had to look it up), here you go:
Here’s an example company that makes and sells cabbing machines. And from the same company’s FAQ:
Q: What’s a cab?
A: Cab is short for the French word cabochon, which means a polished stone without any facets, typically in the shape of a domed oval. Cabs can be seen everywhere in jewelry from pendants, rings and earrings to royal crowns.
Thank you
It is to easy to assume knowledge that may not be there. Your added information is appreciated.

What is the process for getting authorized in the Jewelry Lab? I’m a total neophyte, but I have a couple things (ring, pendant) I’m interested in making & instead of having someone do it for me, I’d love to learn to do it myself!
There is a jewelry lab authorization course that you will need to take, I don’t currently see one listed on the calendar any time soon but classes often are added to the calendar a week or less ahead of time, check up on it every couple days and one will come up. That will only get you access to some of the equipment though, the casting equipment and cabochon cutting machine require an additional authorization.
Great, I’ll keep an eye out for it! That’s one of the last areas I need to get authorized for!
If you haven’t seen it yet a jewelry lab authorization was added to the calendar earlier today, it will be on Wednesday the 9th at 7pm.
Thanks for the heads up @Cooper!!!
