Help Needed: FabLab Machine Care & Planning!

We’re looking for people interested in helping take care of the different machines in the FabLab, as well as those who want to give input on next year’s budget and what colors/materials of filament to order.

Areas Where We Need Help:

  • Maintenance:
    • 3D Resin Printers
    • 3D Filament Printers
    • Lasers
    • Plus: Two other 3D printers need to be evaluated to see how well they work.
  • Input & Planning:
    • Budget suggestions for next year
    • Recommendations for filament colors and materials to order

Training Opportunities:
We also need people interested in learning or teaching classes for the foam cutter and vacuum former.

How to Get Involved:

  • Let us know which machines or areas you’d like to help with.
  • Share your ideas for budget priorities or filament choices.
  • Tell us if you’re interested in classes (either as a learner or instructor).

Thanks for the reminder to put some 3D classes on the calendar. I’ll probably have some more thoughts… I’m definitely out of pocket this upcoming Monday.

Thoughts:

  • Those “two other printers” - should be surplused
  • Clear out the stash of tiles and other miscellaneous donations that have sat for years
  • Get some MK4 or Core Ones in here to replace 2-3 of the MK3s
  • There’s splotches on the floor everywhere since resin stuff has started. I’m not sure how intensive it will be to get that cleaned up or if it’s kinda perma-baked into the floors now
  • We need better laptops. Even with the new batteries we’re having issues. We need the software updated on them at a minimum. Running into issues where PrusaSlicer seems to lose all config info, etc.
  • We should continue to make signage a-la the type that’s above the 3D printers.
  • We should make a bigger sign for the Fablab. Even if it’s simple.

The floors really should be waxed in there. Eventually the tiles will start coming up if dust and fist dirt get underneath. Sweep and mop at the minimum
