Please let @events know when you are meeting so we can get it on the calendar
I dislike that idea. While somewhat practical, I have a feeling the community might consider it an eyesore. It would also require a lot of work to make it usable in the summer. Let’s light a fire in a metal box and then stand in it! It also could be very loud inside when beating on stuff as it’s just a big echo chamber.
The tornado could be used to make the rollers but since we have two lathes in the shop and find of us have bigger heavier lathes, why would we? The most round objects come from spinning the object. Unless you meant to use the tornado as a vertical lathe?
Came back to edit this, but I think I’ll leave it as tornado! That would really soon things
Spin
I was thinking insulation of the noise and temperature variety would be easy enough to do, as for eyesore with the incredible artists we have I’m sure it could be made an amazing artpiece
For the majority of wheels they probably could be done on the lathe. The track wheel has a more domed wheel shape that at least I wouldn’t be confident enough to do by hand. My thought was the TORMACdo ™ could get the general shape of the track wheel and then we could spin it up in a lathe and smooth it to the nth degree.
Oh benevolent @events please put on the calendar a Forge Committee meeting for Wednesday 14th at 7p. And if possible set a recurring meeting every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the same time.
I put you in the lounge as inventory has Classroom 2and there is a class in Classroom 3.
I will take what I can get.
The wheel doesn’t really need to be domed. A slight crown, whether dome shaped or a blunt point will accomplish the same thing. The belt just needs to be able to “ride up” the wheel to center itself.
You will always get a better surface finish off the lathe than an endmill. (That’s assuming there is no chatter on the lathe.) Unless you were going to use a form tool, you would either end up with horizontal ridges or vertical ridges around the perimeter of the wheel if done on the mill.
Reminder to all Forge Committee meeting is TONIGHT. I will be on-site in the lounge and will hopefully get a zoom meeting link/info posted here by 6p.
