Our tours are free and open to the public. While you are welcome to just show up, we prefer that you register in advance so we have enough members on hand to assist with our tours.

Technician Class (Ham Radio) [1 of 2]

The class will be taught by FCC licensed amateur radio operators. The lead instructor is a registered ARRL License Instructor and an accredited Volunteer Examiner (VE) with the Laurel VEC. All the instructors are members of the Wichita Amateur Radio Club.
This class will introduce participants to what amateur radio is and how to become a licensed amateur radio operator. The role of making as it applies to ham radio will also be explored. The class will be very interactive to help ensure that participants leave with the information they need to pursue this fascinating and educational hobby. We will also discuss how a class to help prepare for taking the licensing exam can help with passing and knowing more about what you will do once licensed.
We will discuss plans for an amateur radio station at MakeICT in the Electronics and Rapid Prototyping Lab and will tour the Lab to explain how it will be integrated.

This Weekend Series of two classes (8AM - 5PM Saturday, Noon-5PM Sunday) will cover the material on the entry level (Technician) amateur (ham) radio examination. Students will purchase a textbook that the classes follow. The textbook is “Ham Radio School Technician License Course 2022-2026” and it includes online resources that support the text and classes. Students will purchase the book from Amazon. At the end of the Ssunday Class, a no-cost test session will be offered.

The class schedule is:

Saturday 5/4 - Class will start at 8AM and run to 5PM with a lunch break, Non-MakeIct Members will need to be 15-20 minutes early to sign in.
Sunday 5/5 - Class will start at Noon and run to 5PM

License testing will be available after the conclusion of class on Sunday - expect it to be from 6-7 PM

Laser Cutting Basics

Learn to use the 80 watt CO2 laser cutters at MakeICT. We will discuss the capabilities of the machines, safety rules, and operation in flat mode. Participants will complete a small project using Inkscape and LightBurn software.

Intermediate computer proficiency is recommended. Users should be comfortable with web browsing, Windows file folder navigation, copy and paste shortcut keys, and mouse operation.

One-Color Screen Printing

This class will focus on the basics of screen-printing; from choosing a design, exposing a screen, washing out the stencil, and applying the ink to paper. Participants will get the opportunity to practice good screen printing technique by helping to produce a run of 50 wall-worthy prints.

We'll also answer any curiosities you might have regarding multi-color printing, printing on cloth, and obtaining and using other people's artwork.

Inkscape Basics

Inkscape is a free, open-source vector design application. We use it at MakeICT for laser cutter, vinyl cutter and foundations for other CNC tools.

In this class we'll introduce frequently used Inkscape tools and application:

- Create shapes, paths and texts
- Select, scale and rotate
- Node manipulation
- Creating vector images from raster sources
- Snap and align
- Fill and stroke colors

Intermediate computer and mouse skills are required. Users should be able to navigate basic file and windows menus, right click, double click, drag and use shortcut keys to cut, copy and paste.

There will be time in the last part of the class for questions, answers, and for participants to bring up challenges with their own projects that we can work through together.

Bring in your own laptop or use ours.

Metal shear
Large and small sheet metal brakes
Drill press
Hand grinders
Horizontal band saw
Vertical band saw
Chop Saw
Other equipment not listed may require further authorization. This class is required before taking most other metalworking classes or workshops.
Safety glasses are available but we recommend bringing your own if you can.

Join Steve McHugh in this instructional class as he goes through the history and joys of powder coating.

This class will cover safety of the powder coating area, powder coating gun, air compressor and the powder coating oven. You will get to powder coat an item to take home to show off to your friends! Once you complete this class, you will be authorized to use the powder coating equipment at your leisure.

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The coating is applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow the powder to flow and form a “skin”. The process is used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint.

This class will teach you the basics for Metal Inert Welding (MIG) and set up on the Miller 211 welder. We will cover use of MIG welding in the Hot Area and general welding safety. Once you complete this class you will be authorized to use the MIG welders in the metal shop. Long sleeves are recommended. If you have your own welding helmet and gloves you welcome to bring them.

3D Printer Group

3D Printer Group is a monthly get-together for people to share their enthusiasm for 3D Printing. Bring your questions, show off your creations, share your expertise, and even bring your own printer if you want.

This month, we’re going to work with textiles! Learn how to embed tulle fabric into your prints to create decorative fabric for costumes and props or make functional items like filters.

We’re also going to experiment with creating 3D printed t-shirt transfers!

Learn the basics of 3D printing and how to use the printers at MakeICT.

We'll cover how 3D printing works, materials used in 3D printing, importing 3D files into slicer software, and techniques for successful printing. Each participant will get a chance to practice with the software and print a small object to take home.

Completion of this class will grant authorization for using the 3D printers at MakeICT.

Learn the basics to safely operate the major woodshop tools in this safety class including understanding the limitations of each tool, the forces created when using the tool and how to maintain safe control for improved performance. Tools covered: SawStop table saw, drill press, band saw, router table, jointer, planer, miter saw, oscillating spindle and belt / disk sanders and scroll saw. Expect at least two hours of walkthrough with our tools and equipment, followed by an OPTIONAL hour of hands on practice with the tools aimed at those who have little or no practice with woodworking tools

Prerequisites: Please read the woodshop tool access policy and safety requirements on the wiki page prior to coming to class. Safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, short sleeves • Advisable: Hearing protection

Upon completion of the safety demonstration you can use this woodshop equipment for your projects whenever you work at MakeICT as a member!
