3D Printing Basics

Learn the basics of 3D printing and how to use the printers at MakeICT.

We'll cover how 3D printing works, materials used in 3D printing, importing 3D files into slicer software, and techniques for successful printing. Each participant will get a chance to practice with the software and print a small object to take home.

Completion of this class will grant authorization for using the 3D printers at MakeICT.

Calling all 3D printing enthusiasts! The 3D Printing Group is starting back up.

Our immediate need is to identify members who would like to participate with the repair and maintenance of MakeICT’s 3D printers. No experience necessary: just some mechanically-inclined eagerness to learn.

Everyone welcome! Bring your 3D printing questions or anything neat you’d like to share.

Laser Cutting Basics

This class will teach participants how to use the 80 watt CO2 laser cutters at MakeICT. We will be using Inkscape and LightBurn software to create and cut a simple project.

Participants will learn the capabilities of the laser cutter, machine and material safety, and operation of the machine in Cartesian (flat) mode. All participants will complete a small project to practice running the machine. Intermediate computer proficiency is recommended. Users should be comfortable with web browsing, Windows file folder navigation, copy and paste shortcut keys, and mouse operation.

Learn the basics of vinyl cutting and how to use the vinyl cutter at MakeICT! We'll cover how vinyl cutters work, how to convert vector files for cutting, and how to prepare and apply vinyl decals. Each participant will practice with the software and cut at least one single color vinyl graphic to take home. Vinyl and example files will be provided, but participants may also bring in a vector graphic of their own (subject to review) to try out.

Our tours are free and open to the public. While you are welcome to just show up, we prefer that you register in advance so we have enough members on hand to assist with our tours.

You are welcome to hang out and chat after your tour. There’s always something interesting going on at Maker Monday!

Manual Mill Basics will cover the basic parts of a manual mill while also going thru proper use and operation of the EMCO manual mill.
The end project will include basic operations such as facing, squaring, drilling, and counter boring.

Safety glasses are required.

Metalshop Safety must be completed before signing up for this class.

This class will teach you the basics of metal inert welding (MIG) safety and techniques with hands on practice. Once you complete this class you will be authorized to use the MIG welders in the metalshop. Long sleeves are recommended. If you have your own welding helmet and gloves, you are welcome to bring them.

Learn how to use the CNC plasma cutter with Fusion 360. We will walk through the basics of programming a file in Fusion 360 and cutting it out of metal on the plasma cutter. Please view the CNC Plasma Cutter page on the MakeICT wiki as it has the material we will be using in class. We will move quickly through the class and it helps to be familiar with these topics beforehand!

Woodshop Hazardous Materials Authorization

Ages: 16 and up

Learn to use exotic materials safely in our shared space. Participants will learn how to clean re-claimed wood, test for lead paint, and adequately clean up after the use of exotic woods. Once authorized, participants will be allowed to use exotic woods in the woodshop at any time. Expect to get dirty. Participants are encouraged to bring respirators if they have one, though dust masks will be provided.

*This CAN be taken before being authorized for the woodshop, though the use of the tools in the space would still require Woodshop Authorization.

The instructor of this class may be slightly late. If so please be patient, if more than 5 minutes have passed or your just very anxious then use his phone number (posted in the woodshop) to call and confirm he is in route.

One-Color Screen Printing

This class will focus on the basics of screen-printing; from choosing a design, exposing a screen, washing out the stencil, and applying the ink to paper. Participants will get the opportunity to practice good screen printing technique by helping to produce a run of 50 wall-worthy prints.

We'll also answer any curiosities you might have regarding multi-color printing, printing on cloth, and obtaining and using other people's artwork.

This class is for those interested in using the CNC ShopBot in the woodshop. During the class, students will design a wooden ring on Easel.com and carve out said ring on the ShopBot. Carving on the ShopBot is quick and accurate, so each person will have the chance to operate the ShopBot themselves and take home a small token of their hard work.
