Metal Lathe Basics will cover the basic parts of the metal lathe while also going thru the proper use and operation of the Craftsman and Logan metal lathes.
The end project will include basic operations such as facing and parting as well as knurling and adding internal threading.

The Metalshop Safety Class will cover basic safety for working in both the Hot room and Cold room for the Metalshop at MakeICT, as well as some basic expectations. The following tools will be covered :
Pipe bender
Tubing roller
Metal shear
Large and small sheet metal brakes
Drill press
Hand grinders
Horizontal band saw
Vertical band saw
Chop Saw
Other equipment not listed may require further authorization. This class is required before taking most other metalworking classes or workshops.
Safety glasses are available but we recommend bringing your own if you can.

Plan on about 2.5 hours for the Lathe Safety Authorization Class. Much of the information will be covered quickly, with handouts available. Key pieces of safety will be hands on with examples to hold and examine, and an opportunity for you to use the tools on a workpiece to make some of the things we discuss.

Safety issues will include:

- Basic Lathe Checks before turning it on.
- PPE for Turning and safe clothing around spinning wood or other material
- An introduction to safe tool usage for Carbide Tools and Traditional Tools with basic information on sharpening.
- Introduction to Mounting Methods for safely attaching the workpiece to the Lathe.
- Wood Selection, considering safety and where the wood is from. We will address the MakeICT Hazardous Material Policy and the
implications for woodturning. This would include working with damaged wood, such as spalting, bark inclusions and worm holes.
Additional PPE considerations and products to address various damaged wood issues.
- We will touch on safety while sanding on the lathe.
- We will touch on safety and choices of finishing products for turned items.

A Test Out Form of this Authorization Class is available. (Contact Instructor)

Class size will vary based on the number of experienced SKW Members available to assist.

Woodshop Safety Authorization is Required
Woodshop Hazardous Materials Authorization is highly recommended.

Ceramics Authorization class will take place during the already existing Ceramics Night event which is a recurring class that takes place the first and third Tuesday of each month.
Topics to be covered will grant authorization and access to the ceramics studio. We will cover pottery wheel authorization, learning the slab roller, extruder, learning the ins and outs of the room as well as cleaning up all equipment and materials

Intro to Powder Coating

This class will cover safety of the powder coating area, powder coating gun, air compressor and the powder coating oven. You will get to powder coat an item to take home to show off to your friends! Once you complete this class you be authorized to use the powder coating equipment.

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a “skin”. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals.

3D Printing Basics

Learn the basics of 3D printing and how to use the printers at MakeICT!

We'll cover how 3D printing works, materials used in 3D printing, importing 3D files into slicer software, and important techniques for successful printing. Each participant will get a chance to practice with the software and print a small object to take home. Sample models will be provided, but participants may also bring in an STL file of a small (~3cm3) object to try out.

Completion of this class will grant authorization for using the 3D printers at MakeICT.

Wichita USD 259 has Education Imagine Academy which is a sort of homeschool/public school via computer hybrid. They are having an in person visit for an activity the third week of February and the third week of April. Elementary will be at MakeICT Tuesdays, middle school on Wednesday, and high school on Thursday, from 12-2 each day. (that was the plan, it looks like there has been further adjustment to the schedule)

Quilting for Beginners

Want to learn to make a quilt? You’re in luck! This is a beginner class to go over the basics of making a quilt.
You will be making a mini quilt sizing about 14 inches by 14 inches. Mini quilts can be used as wall art or a table centerpiece mat. Materials will be provided. This is a great opportunity to have hands on experience to learn the process of creating a quilt that can last a lifetime.
This class will cover:
* Safety while cutting fabric and using a sewing machine.
* Find a quilt pattern that fits your project and how to read the pattern.
* Where to find fabric, how to prep, and cut the fabric.
* Selecting the right thread and threading the sewing machine.
* Sewing the first block.
* Importance of pressing.
* Piecing the quilt together.
* Different options for basting.
* QUILTING
* Binding and tagging your finished quilt.
* Share your masterpiece!
***Basic sewing machine knowledge is highly recommended but not required. We will not be using the long arm quilting machine during this class

A little about myself, I am a self taught quilter and have made over 15 lap to queen size quilts and given as gifts to family members and friends. I’m here to give you the hands on, in person experience that I wished I could have had when I first started. |

Join Jesse Schlenker, Wood Shop Lead, and John Nicholas, Assistant Lead for Lathes in a hands on class on sharpening essential woodworking hand tools. The attendance is limited to allow all members to do some basic practice with various tools during the class period. Students should feel free to bring a personal tool with edge work for sharpening. The wood shop tools are available and need to be sharpened.

We will discuss steel types and define some basic terms. Then we look at the edge, and the bevels, and learn how to correctly touch them up or do a major repair or mostly something in between. We may even see something else different with the tool and address that as well. To do this we will also cover care for the stones, diamond cards and the various sharpening tools along the bench in the Assembly / Lathe Room.

Basic tools to be covered are chisels, spokeshaves, planes, and the Spindle Roughing Gouge, the Parting Tool, Spindle Gouge and Bowl Gouge, for the lathe.

PPE will be concerned with safety for fingers, eyes and breathing of dust from the power tools used.

Woodshop Safety and Lathe Authorization are required. Part 1 will be held in the Classroom 3. Part Two in the Lathe room.

Learn the basics to safely operate the major woodshop tools in this safety class including understanding the limitations of each tool, the forces created when using the tool and how to maintain safe control for improved performance. Tools covered: SawStop table saw, drill press, band saw, router table, jointer, planer, miter saw, oscillating spindle and belt / disk sanders and scroll saw. Expect at least two hours of walkthrough with our tools and equipment, followed by an OPTIONAL hour of hands on practice with the tools aimed at those who have little or no practice with woodworking tools

Prerequisites: Please read the woodshop tool access policy and safety requirements on the wiki page prior to coming to class. Safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, short sleeves • Advisable: Hearing protection

Upon completion of the safety demonstration you can use this woodshop equipment for your projects whenever you work at MakeICT as a member!

Laser Cutting Basics

This class will teach participants how to use the 80 watt CO2 laser cutters at MakeICT. We will be using the LightBurn software to create and cut a simple project.

Participants will learn the capabilities of the laser cutter, machine and material safety, and operation of the machine in Cartesian (flat) mode. All participants will complete a small project to practice running the machine.

Please bring a USB flash drive if you have one. Completion of this class grants the necessary authorization to use the laser cutter.

One-Color Screen Printing

This class will focus on the basics of screen-printing; from choosing a design, exposing a screen, washing out the stencil, and applying the ink to paper. Participants will get the opportunity to practice good screen printing technique by helping to produce a run of 50 wall-worthy prints.

We'll also answer any curiosities you might have regarding multi-color printing, printing on cloth, and obtaining and using other people's artwork.

Carving on the ShopBot is quick and accurate, so each person will have the chance to operate the ShopBot themselves and take home a small token of their hard work.
