Beginner Watercolor Class: Outdoor Garden

Learn how to paint botanicals with quick sketches in this beginner-friendly watercolor class. We will be outside sketching the gardens at MakeICT, then returning inside to paint it. This Watercolor Workshop will teach basic sketching and watercolor techniques while working on a small painting project. Art supplies are provided but you are welcome to bring your own to get acquainted with your supplies.
If you bring your own supplies, please bring:
Various watercolors including blue, yellow, red, and green
Watercolor paper
And your brushes
***Again, I will supply everything so you don’t have to worry about the above unless you want to familiarize yourself with your own paints!
The watercolors provided are made by hand and made with eco-friendly ingredients including honey, non-toxic pigment, small amounts of preservative, and water.
About the Instructor: Tyra (She/They) is an Eco-Artist residing in Wichita, KS and has always been interested in the connection to earth-friendly art practices. She runs an art studio where they make eco-friendly watercolors by hand and teach watercolor classes both in person at MakeICT, Wichita Botanica, and Old Town Farm and Art Market, as well as online.

CNC Plasma Cutting Basics W/ Fusion 360

Learn how to use the CNC plasma machine with fusion 360. We will start with a 2D model and go through the steps to cut it out of a sheet of metal. You will follow along in the classroom to understand the procedure needed to produce the g-code for the Plasma CNC machine. Then, each student will have the opportunity to go through the process on the Plasma CNC machine to do a dry-run cut of the 2D design from class.

If you intend to follow along using your own computer, you are welcome to bring it. You will need to install and create a Fusion 360 account as well as download and import the tools, templates, and post processor files (all custom for the makeICT machine) from the Wiki before the class.

This class will teach participants how to use the 80 watt CO2 laser cutters at MakeICT. We will be using Inkscape and LightBurn software to create and cut a simple project.
Participants will learn the capabilities of the laser cutter, machine and material safety, and operation of the machine in Cartesian (flat) mode. All participants will complete a small project to practice running the machine. Intermediate computer proficiency is required. Users should be comfortable with web browsing, Windows file folder navigation, copy and paste shortcut keys, and mouse operation.
Please bring a USB flash drive if you have one. Completion of this class grants the necessary authorization to use the laser cutter.

Pug Mill Class (Experimental)

Come learn with me as we embark on making moist clay from commercial bagged dry clay.
We will be mixing up dry clay with silica sand to make B-mix with added strength from the sand suitable for making larger pieces.
Each participant should (this is my first time trying this) end up with 10 pounds of clay.
Health advisory: We will be working with significant sources of silica dust and chronic exposure is harmful! basic masks will be provided. Bring your own N95 or respirator if you would like to.
Also the room the pug mill is in is regularly above 90 degrees so plan accordingly. We will try to get sweaty part done in 10 to 20 min then step into the AC while it mixes.

Powder Coating Basics

This class will cover safety of the powder coating area, powder coating gun, air compressor and the powder coating oven. You will get to powder coat an item to take with you, or you can bring a small metal object with you to powder coat. Be aware, however, that it might not be suitable and in such cases you’ll need to use one of the items provided. Completion of this class authorizes you to use the powder coating booth and equipment.
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a “skin”. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals.
Participants will be required to wear at least Kn95 masks (to be provided) or higher levels of respiratory protection.
