Engraving Mild Steel

I am working a Christmas gifts for my friends does anyone have some experience with engraving mild steel on Mario or Luigi?

If someone has some experience doing this could you tell me what setting you used. Thanks for any help given.

Co2 lasers are not really made for engraving on steel typically but there are sprays you can use that when lasered give a fairly durable black finish.
It has been my experience these sprays are rather pricy

If it were me. I’d put a mask on it. Like making tape or painter’s tape. Then laser the image removing the mask. Then I would use a 12v car battery charger and some cotton balls, with some salt water and go over it which electroetches the metal. You could also use a bath of ferric chloride. Leave it in there till you get the etch depth you want. Then you just clean off the mask and give it some TLC on a cloth wheel. Strop it up and it should look right nice.

I think the spray is pretty much what I am after. Thanks for the advise.
