Would anyone else be interested in a dye department? First I thought it could go with textiles but risk of getting things dirty makes it a better fit for painting, and then I thought.. why not a new department?! setup is simple, we just need a few boiler plates and big 4 gallon pots (Asian stores sell these affordably). And then a bunch of rit dye! Which is also pretty cheap at $7ish a bottle (maybe bulk is cheaper?). Oh and we’d need a big sink. That’s pretty much it
I’ve been dying my clothes for years and it’s so much fun. I’ve made some of my own favorite color mixes. I can teach a class if people are interested! It’s such a great way to get your clothes looking exactly how you want them, whether you made your own or purchased or thrifted. Eventually we could learn about natural plant dyes as well, but Rit is easy and straightforward and can dye natural fibers as well as polyester.
To make a new area, you will need to get 4 additional people who are interested and bring it up to the board. The board planning meeting would be your next step.
I’d love a class and/or a department! Access to a large sink for rinsing would be super helpful.
I’m primarily interested in dying textiles (clothes, plushies) but I am also curious about learning to dye other materials. I’ve seen dolls made with polyurethane resin or vinyl dyed with Rit too.
I had already started to gather supplies to dye some dresses but I’d love to get some experience first.
I LIKE this idea as i was about to setup a big dye pot on a propane buner here at home. But would pitch in to cover a communal pot and countertop burner.
My first dye will be a heavy white cotton rope i wish to dye as dark purple as possible. As usual for MakeICT crafts, having an experienced person to ask gives me more confidence to strike out again. I have not done dyeing for decades. And while Captain AI can help tell me if i need a mordant or a caustic wash first… its much more pleasant to ask a community member for their ‘pinion.. Where might i pitch in seed money for a pot or burner? Im ready.
Also, at home, my plan was to boil it for a few hours, then leave it in for a week or more to really get the dye in. Then save the contents for future tshirts etc. Can it be saved?
Im in no hurry for the dyed rope. But its been sitting in garage for months and it needs to get moving.
and I should probly come up with a public fib about my intentions with the rope so as not to embarass any prudish gentle souls. ;->
