Dom's c-base visit

In May I had the opportunity to travel to Berlin for work. I extended my 2-day work trip into a 10-day adventure. I did so much while I was there, but one of my favorite parts was visiting c-base, a somewhat legendary facility in the hackerspace/makerspace community.

c-base is famous partly because of how long they’ve been around and partly because of the incredible lore they have constructed around their community it is a crashed spacestation in the middle of Berlin.

I visited during an open house. Pictures beyond the entrance were forbidden for member privacy reasons, unfortunately, but it is a sight! There is not a square inch of the building that isn’t decorated in theme a functional piece of space-tech. Despite how long c-base has been around, members still adopt the lore and my entire tour of the facility was given in-character human members give public tours. I even encountered some members actively writing new canon in the style of a scientific journal article exploring the possible explanations for the torus-like shape of c-base.

If you’re ever in Berlin, check it out and bring cash for the bar!

Also, one way they raise money is by selling these hard-back books that cover the history of c-base. I bought two - one for myself and one to live at MakeICT.

AMAZING! I love visiting makerspaces as part of my travels, did they have any good tools or practices that we don’t have?

I love visiting makerspaces

Well, first off, it’s a spacestation, not a makerspace

Anyway, it definitely leaned more towards hackerspace than makerspace, and equipment wise it was a little underwhelming. What the facility lacked in equipment though, it made up for in character and decor. Community-wise, everybody there seemed super chill with each other and were pretty welcoming after I introduced myself to a few different people. It was a little awkward inserting myself into on-going conversations with people I didn’t know but who obviously know each other. I pretty quickly felt like I fit right in though.

That sounds like a really cool trip man. Reminds me from the photos a bit of the idea of the Zone from Roadside Picnic. If the Zone were invaded by graffiti artists from Amsterdam.
