Domino stacking robot?

my family and I got into domino art this year. it is super fun, I own about 1000 of these now and I like zoning out and making creations like this:

When I talk to people at the makerspace about this they ALWAYS say “why make those lines yourself, there are domino laying robots! we should make a robot!”

yeah we love robots. okay fine, there’s one on instructables that I can scale up and make, so I’ve got some 3d prints started (it’s like 50 little 3d printed parts so it’ll be a while).

but the domino robots all do one thing - take a nice stack of dominos, and line them up. I can probably do this faster than a robot. once you’ve got your dominos in a nice organized stack they line up FAST.

which brings me to my real challenge. I’d rather have a robot that could either…

  • pick up my dominoes off the floor and put them in nice stacks or
  • have a funnel I could pour dominoes into, like a hopper, and I get the nice stack.

if I have to work to make the nice stacks just to feed that robot, I’m going to be jealous that the robot gets the fun easy task. and all the glory.

but I’ve been watching videos of coin sorters and brick sorters and I can’t really figure out a great way to make this happen.

anybody ever built a stacking machine?

The funnel would be easier, add a vibrator to help adjust the dominoes, appropriate guides…bingo stacked Dominos

A funnel with a flat side so you can just sweep them in…
