Cost of items printed for internal use

How does the fablab deal with the cost of filament for stuff printed for use at makeict? For example, if I had somebody print some dust collector accessories for woodshop, how would I go about paying fablab for the filament? Or do fablab tend to just eat the cost of filament for that kind of stuff?

If you need something printed, and can’t find anyone, at least for the next two weeks, I have oodles of free time. Especially if it is something that would benefit from being printed in a filament type other than PLA, such as PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, or PA (Nylon), I would be happy to print those at home, as I have printers better suited for those types of filament at home.

I’m not really worried about cost, unless it was something that required more than 1/2 roll of filament, and then, I’d only want to be reimbursed for the actual cost of filament, which generally runs me between 1.2¢ to 2.3¢ per gram, depending on the type and color. For small prints that ran less than 100 grams, I wouldn’t even be worried about it.

Of course, as you have also seen, I can run jobs that require up to 8 filament colors/types that can be printed simultaneously, if needed,

The cleanest way may be to order a spool of ABS or PETG (since as John pointed out, you’ll probably benefit from something other than the PLA we have). We have some ABS on hand but it’s multiple years old and is useless enough to go into the trash. We also have some grant money that’s available for ventilation which this would fall under, but just paying the fablab for filament is a little close to self-dealing with the grant.

I need to see what all is covered by the grant. Iirc, rivers’s new cyclone project came out of that. There are a few things I can do that I think fall under it. How do I go about accessing that funding? Letter to the board?

@aargri should have the specifics of the grant and funding.

If the FabLab is thinking about throwing out that old yellow ABS, I’d like to offer up the back seat of my car as your dumpster.

There was a roll in there last year that had about 100 grams on it, so I put a $5 in the bucket and brought it home. I was able to get it to print after a long drying session and with slower settings than normal with my old dedicated ABS printer at home. I now have a P1S that excels printing ABS, ASA, and Nylon, and I’ll be more than happy to take it off your hands and see if I can have as good of luck with that as I did with the small amount I tried last year.

That’d be up to @Andyoutside but I’m all for clearing stuff out if someone can find a use.

I’m actually headed over there for the vinyl class tonite here shortly. I’ll take a look and see how much is in there and shoot him a message, although I’ll also see @Andyoutside on Sunday for the resin class.

It looks like the shop-vacs are all in a sad state. I did fix the power switch on the little Craftsman that used to be attached to the Bosch miter saw last night. But I guess we’ve never purchased or made an adapter to fit regular hoses to that miter saw. So I’m going to look into that. I guess I need to see, too, if Shop-Vac accessories fall under the grant.

If it is a small item just email fablab and we can eat the cost. If it is a large item there are big rolls of filament that can be used.
thanks,
