I need help!! I poured some molds last night and this is the first time this has happened to me. I poured the molds and then drained them at the appropriate time. I then let them sit in the mold over night so almost 12 hours. I pulled the first mold out just fine with no problems. When i go to pull the second one out, I broke the mold in the process and the clay was all stuck the inside of the mold.
I have used this mold before and it turned out okay and the other mold i poured last night turned out just fine too!
I had used a mold several times back to back i.e. when I was making my Bonzai pots I could do 2 pots a day. I never did anything special to the mold I just made sure it was thoroughly cleaned out before I poured the next one in. also when using the same mold more than once I allowed extra time like 10 to 15 min before I poured out the slip because the mold is damp from the previous pour. Before I take molds apart I do bang them with my palm or one could tap it with a rubber mallet gentle enough not to break the mold but hard enough to transfer shock to the cast. In my experience, the cast usually shrinks and pulls off the wall if given enough time to set up which I do for 6-12 hours depending on the mass and thickness of the cast.
I pour slip in and usually give it 30 min before I pour out slip 40 to 45 if it is after the initial pour
I took the liberty of asking Don at evans ceramics he is the best authority imo on the subject. All i got was when molds are wet it does create a little more difficultly getting them apart especially if its difficult initially.
He did say if you let him know what mold it was and if it is not discontinued he might be able to get the broken piece ordered for you as opposed to buying the whole mold. Save you some cash!
Thank for asking for me! I appreciate that!! I might stop in and see him too but the molds i got were from an estate sale and VERY old so im thinking its probs discontinued
