Christmas Break Project

So, i’ve been trying to do a different project at the makerspace each Christmas break for the past few years.

For this one, i’d like to focus on the boiler room most likely starting on Saturday Dec 27th.

I don’t mind donating materials to make the following goals happen, if @Facilities is cool with this list.

  1. Finish the concrete work around where the boiler was
  2. (Maybe) bring up my hypertherm 45 and torch out more of the remaining unused steam pipes
  3. Clear out unclaimed junk or 3-nerd off the stuff that’s never used (like the refractory brick and basketball hoop)
  4. Move the castle down there and figure out a better way to store what is left down there (we have a couple of pallet racks down there that might make this an easier project)

yes, facilities is cool with the list.

I could pick up the Concrete. I have calculated it would take 10 to 11 bags. Just don’t have a way to mix it.

I am out of town until Saturday December 20th.
If Matthew and Rustin are available I could meet in the afternoon on Sunday or Monday evening to review the project and figure out the logisitics.
Anyone else that is interested in this is free to join us.

Ill be there, I have a woodshop safely class at 2pm though. (I was talking about Saturday, but can be here on Sunday.)

What time works for you on sunday?

My preference is anytime between 3 and 5 but really I can do anything after 10:30 on Sunday.

Are we talking about Sunday 21st or 28th?

the 21st is my preference.

So the 21st between 3 and 5 to discuss what all we’re doing in the boiler-less room?

That works for me.

I’ll be there.

I’ll be there. See you tomorrow.

Thanks Jai, Matthew, and Stephan -

Tonight we figured out a plan for getting the concrete done. There will be some more prep work to do on Friday, and then Saturday morning we’ll do the actual pour.

We’re putting a pause button on tearing out more of the boiler piping at the moment. We determined that with how far apart the hangers are for the pipe, we would need to come up with multiple supports for each section to keep pipe from dropping in an uncontrolled fashion.

We’re also going to print off a few ‘taking offer/3-nerd’ forms to help clear out some of the unneeded electrical boxes and fire brick that have been sitting down there. There have also been some materials that have been marked for recycling.

We do need to fivure out a better home for the plastic shelves.

There’s also some electrical boxes that we may be able to use for other big pieces of equipment, but there is a box for controlling the boiler that we think might be better off getting someone else’s boiler up and running.

Fairly certain we have over 20p full fire brickstaking up space in the boiler room too.

We’re still on for tomorrow at 10 to do the concrete work, right? I’ll be there.

Yes, thanks for all your help with mixing, pouring, and leveling the concrete!

Everyone else - Please don’t walk on the concrete for the next couple days!

What’s next? The concrete looks good and feels solid.

Now we try to get rid of the rest of the stuff down there, we need to coordinate with the facilities lead and see how he wants to handle the other stuff down there.

There were some people that didn’t realize we were selling the fire brick, so I might suggest a second round of selling the brick and advertising it in the newsletter.

Once that’s done, we might get that 2nd pallet rack setup and make sure it clears the exhaust from the water heater.

You might contact the local blacksmithing club to see if anyone there wants the brick.

They’ve been notified via their IM chat, but it might be worth letting them know during their Saturday monthly meeting (I think it’s the 1st Monday of the month)

I think the starting bid is just too high, even if it’s still a good deal. I always ask, are you trying to make money? Or are you trying to get rid of it?
