Chad Killblane, New Member, Hello Everyone

That works, I was interested in blender for other reasons. This week is spring break so I have a lot of availability. I was also thinking about building a steam box for us. It works work for the guitar group and woodworking in general.

For machining things we tend to use fusion 360 (or sometimes Blender). For just things we want to laser cut, there are lots of options…we can discuss.

Sorry I went AWOL, last week was spring break and I worked obsessively in my wood shop. I tend to get hyper focused on projects and don’t notice anything else. That said, I have a proposed class series that will meet the needs of the guitar group.

  • Router templating class
    • How to prep stock
    • How to precut and shape
    • Affixing the template
    • Safely using the template
    • Finishing work
  • Steam bending / bent wood laminating
    • How to prep stock
    • How to bend the work
    • Finish shaping.
    • Final steps
  • Hand tool basics (this may need to be more than one class. I need to do some testing)
    • Prepping tools
    • How to saw straight
    • How to saw “controlled” curves
    • Chisel basics
    • Hand plane basics
    • Rasps and spoke shaves
    • Card scrapers

(For this class I need to inventory our available hand tools. I don’t remember there being many. I can bring some of mine. However, that might be a bit unfair. Mine are very nice “read expensive” versions. That are significantly better quality than the average.

Putting it all together making a fun box.

I will post this over on the wood working forum as well. However, since it is designed primarily for the guitar group I want to get your feedback first.

Hey we are all volunteers here… we understand vacations  . I love what you are proposing. They are all skills that guitar builders need (body routing, neck shaping, and wood bending for acoustic)
I also bet that others would love learning these skills.
(Hmmm… I wonder if hand-building for kids might be a good class… )

If you can get me a list of tools you think we lack for hand-building, we can craft a proposal to the board to get the woodshop the tools you need.

Good idea, I will come up there and take a mental inventory Wednesday.

Couple of things, first I found this video that might be relevant to the guitar group.

It definitely helped me see what skills are necessary for acoustic guitar builds. So, I will make a few minor tweaks to my proposed curriculum. I plan on offering the class(s) this summer, after the spring semester has ended.

As for hand tools, the situation is rather grim in the wood shop. However, this beginner set of Japanese hand tools is enough to get the job done.

What I need to know is, how do I acquire wood for the student projects? I will cross post this on the wood working forum in a more refined format.
