Buying a laser

I’m interested in buying my own laser for my house and seeing if I can make some money with it along with doing my own projects.

I wondered if anyone could help me with some guidance on what/where to buy, what to avoid, setup, things I wouldn’t know that I need, that type of stuff.

What I want:

Similar power and bed size to the Rabbit at MakeICT.
Something that can work with free software like Inkscape and Laserweb (Or can they all do that?)
Something that I’ll be able to get into a building through a normal door (Can they be disassembled?)

Any help and information would be appreciated!

Zac L is the guy I would talk to he’s the fab lab assistant lead and is building his own right now. He is not on discourse but his @makeict email is on the wiki. Cheers.

Thanks :]

A laser meeting those requirements will likely cost around $5500, if ordered direct from China,
assuming you don’t get hit with any Trump tariff.

Yes, I understand that they are expensive, if that is what you meant by it.

MakeICT and I each have a laser slightly bigger than the Rabbit on the slow boat from China right now.
We started the process around February and now we are hoping to have them installed by the end of July.

If you can get hold of Tom Bloom, fab lab lead, he would have detailed information about what we’ve been through.

Have you looked at the Glowforge? It works for some people but not everyone. https://glowforge.us/ysW3zN

If you want to see one, I have the pro at my house.
