Hi!! I have zero experience in the wood shop but I REALLY want to make myself some book ends. What’s the best way to get this started?
So you have a design in mind, whether it’s something you dreamed up or something you saw somewhere? That may dictate how you go about making them.
I’m kind of interested in possibly carving them because I have an idea for some flower ones but I don’t know for sure!
I would get some quality wood. Basswood is a very popular choice as the grain doesn’t fight you while working it. MakeICT has some carving gouges, but not a great selection, and they are in need of some TLC. I will try to put some serious work into our hand tools this month and pay more attention their upkeep in general.
I know there are members with lots of carving experience, but I don’t know who you are. Please speak up if you do, or tag those who do if you know them!
As Woodshop Lead, I’d be happy to offer as much guidance as I can and definitely want to hear about your progress.
Thanks, and enjoy making your bookends regardless of how you do it.
