In the past we’ve talked about installing bike racks.
I still think we should, but I also like photographing cool racks on my travels, so I’m posting them here.
You should post any that you see too.
I kind of raised my hand to look after the bike rack project, but the space available for a bike rack became a bit of a hurdle. I do still think we should get a rack put up though.
I was working on the original project which did not get beyond the design phase. I strongly believe that we should and actively need to get this done. Main concerns are space and materials and a working cnc plasma cutter (which is slightly dubious).
I was starting to push for getting something put up even if it’s not cool looking. It can be made so it’s modular so the individual racks can be replaced with something fancy later on. IMO, the limited space that’s available is the bigger issue.
Here’s the previous bike rack discussion for reference: Bike Parking?
As a guy who occasionally rides to the space, in the short term it’d be nice if we didn’t have three bikes more or less permanently parked inside.
This would also work with an idea I’ve been cooking up recently: Design Contests.
Figure out the approximate size, hold a contest, and give $250-500 to someone who comes up with an awesome workable-enough design. (and also hold contests for other things like a little free library, little maker library, the sign on Mt. Vernon, etc).
Before we could do a contest, we need to know how much space we can have. Based on all the guidance from the previous discussion, the existing space behind the dumpster would only allow for 1 or 2 bikes to be parked there.
Can the dumpster live on the other side of the garage door? It’d also have the bonus of not having the dumpster being the closest thing to the front door.
I’m happy to take up the subject again.
I just wanted to post some pics of cool racks I’ve seen. Please post some too if you have any.
Have we considered moving the bikes around the corner - by the other door. I know it is not close to the front door- but I think that is ok if you are riding a bike. Of course, it is not quite secure, but it is bigger.
Iirc, the concerns about it being elsewhere were safety, security, and getting wet if it’s raining lol
The dumpster location thinking was:
Central location means easy access(take the trash out on your way out)
Doesn’t block the driveway out to Drollinger
Gives the collecting truck plenty of room to maneuver without requiring it to go deep into the parking lot
Easy to screen the dumpster from Drollinger as required by County and City
Not saying it has to stay that way just some background.
Do you mean the East entrance?
I was thinking we should do it by the East entrance.
I agree.
