Hiya!!! Do we/MAKEICT have a large light box we can all use to take pics of our large projects?
If so where?
If not…. Would this be something we could make and store here for all to use?
And then… where could we store it…?
Visual Arts?

I like this idea. WSU had a backdrop probably about 4’ x 8’ that students could use to photograph their work. With two studio lights and a mount on a tripod that you can put your cellphone in. Would be beneficial for all departments.
I think the A/V group was working on a camera rig and a background to help us document our projects better. I think James Lancaster is a good contact on that one.
I have one D and I bought to take pics of our stuff in. It was like 100 bucks, hold on…
PULUZ Upgrade Light Box & Soft Box, 16"x16" Professional Shooting Tent with 480 LED Lights Photo Studio Light Box Photography with 4 Color PVC Backdrops for Jewelry and Product Photography https://a.co/d/irTzujX
That guy. It’s pretty cool, I was taking solid pics with my cell. It has top down as well as from the front. Folds down pretty flat when not in use. And if any of the lights have issues, its simple enough to be fixed in the electronics lab. Just need to keep it clean.

Several years ago, Kim Burton taught a class that included how she made one of those. Not sure if there’s one still lying around.
I have always wanted us to have one!
I taught a general “how to be successful on etsy” sort of class, back when I was doing a lot of etsy stuff… of course the problem with etsy is that once you learn how to be successful you’re super busy packing orders every dang night and you get burnt out and quit. but that’s another story.
Anyway yes my light box was part of that, it was PVC, white ripstop nylon, and some workshop clip lights carrying full spectrum LED bulbs.
When I quit etsy I donated my light box to the space and it lived up front for a while but people kept moving it/losing it and not really getting it. I don’t think it survived the move, unless somebody sees a pile of 3ft PVC pipes someplace.
Maybe we need something bigger/more purposeful? With dedicated storage space for sure! I think mine wasn’t big enough!
So Kim has a good point here. If we are gonna do this, then we need to make sure it has a permanent home and some area to take care of it. I would suggest maybe the media area (if we can garner enough interest… right now we only have 2-4 people and that’s not enough.) or possibly Visual Arts.
Circling back around on this topic as it looks like we def have interest and it would be a great tool for all of us.
Can we make a large light box for the space?
If so…… where could it be stored…?
Visual arts?
Who does this question go to other than the visual arts lead for storage purposes…?
If the box is designed in such a way to be flat packed it could reside in the area that uses it the most. My guess is that this would be for producing high quality photos of large scuptures and the like?
Could probably create a folding square frame with wingnuts that lock it in place and a set of rgb led tape to produce even light over the object, with the ability to adjust lighting brightness, warmth, hue, ect. Then it folds away to be tucked behind shelving until needed agian. As far as who would be in charge i beleive the process is the same as an external donation, at least it was when the 2x72 grinder was built in house.
What?
I’m happy to take point on this project if it is given a permanent home. A corner in visual arts? a corner in the library? I think this would be super beneficial for people to share all of the amazing things they make there.
Is there one particular area that is more likely to use it? Let’s make sure that we have a lead that is willing to give it a home. We need to try and keep things from creeping into room 4 so we can keep that as a larger multipurpose room and not the space where we store things.
Visual Arts hasn’t expressed an interest in it so it doesn’t seem fair to dump it on them. Especially with all of the other stuff in their 1/2 of a room.
I agree all of that photography equipment that has been planted in there and not been in use for 6 months takes up a large portion of the room
What do you suggest?
See Mike’s post:

How large are you wanting? There are a million foldable still photo studios on the web for relatively cheap (less than $100). These could be stowed away in a closet or a nook in the boiler room.
Alternatively, you could mount a roll of white butcher paper to any wall in the space and bring one of the gallery podiums underneath it when in use and put it away after you’re done. Light boxes aren’t necessary in most instances. A white backdrop, natural light and a shallow depth of field will do the trick.
Sean, I love that butcher paper idea!
