Bat Cave…

I mean owl box

It’s an owl box. For screech owls. Or squirrels. But preferably screech owls.

Hopefully attract screech owls to my yard and give them a place to nest.

Now to figure out how to hang it. Fifteen to thirty feet above ground. Solidly. To withstand Kansas weather. But lowerable for cleaning.

Many years ago, a couple dog lives ago, i had a wheaten colored scottie named Blaise. Like all scotties, she was a walker. I had already convinced her that a walk around my 800 feet or so of walked inside my fenced perimeter was a walk, even if it was one of many laps, many times a day, anytime, day or night. I liked to tell people that she was my pagan witch dog, as she especially liked “midnight” yard patrols.

One night was different. She stopped in a very dark part of the yard between house and garage and was looking at the garage wall. So i looked too, not knowing what she saw. But then i saw it too. About five feet away, about chest high above the ground, something not as black as the background, about 7-10 inches tall, just a dark grey barrel shaped monster. We both stared at it for a few seconds. I’m not sure who was more surprised when it suddenly flew off. Silently. Not a whisper of sound. Absolutely no sound. Mind boggled! Later from its size snd sound, or lack of sound when it flew, I figured out that it was most likely a screech owl. I ended up seeing that screech owl or one of its cousins nearly every night.

I don’t see them much anymore. Partially because my current dog doesn’t need as many night yard patrols. But i thought i should still encourage them to visit. Hence the owl box.
